Help 23,000 Ugandan Grandmothers Care for Children

YOUR impact in the lives of YOUR grandmothers in Uganda is huge. Every month we tell you about another grandmother who YOU have helped escape poverty but please know that for every grandmother story we share, there are thousands more stories we could tell. 

This month we want to tell you about a grandmother named Grace.

Grace was mourning the loss of her daughter while raising her two orphaned grandchildren on a teacher's pension. The pension was small and often unreliable. Sometimes it came when it was supposed to and other times she had to wait several months before her money would come. 

Even though she struggled, her heart swelled when she heard about two children who had been abandoned at the local hospital. Grace couldn't turn her back on them. She volunteered to care for them too.

When Grace first learned about her local grandmother’s group, she was excited to meet women her age who faced the same issues she did. She was happy for the opportunity to share her experience as a teacher, advising other grandmothers how to deal with undisciplined children.

Grace says that her first loan from the group “was a blessing that melted so many troubles away.” She received 100,000 Ugandan Shillings (about $30 USD) to buy a pig. Later she received an additional, smaller loan to buy nutritious mash to feed it.

Grace thinks that the pig was the best investment she could have made. Soon, it gave birth to 9 piglets. She made enough money from selling the piglets that she was able to travel to attend the college graduation ceremony of one of the orphans she is raising. She easily paid back her loan. Grace plans to expand her pig project and will continue to sell piglets to help buy food and make repairs to her home.
