Right now there is a grandmother in Uganda. Sweat pours down her face and her shoulders ache but she doesn't stop swinging her garden hoe. After a day's work in this field she will earn just 3,000 shillings (about $1 USD). She will use this money to feed and clothe her grandchildren as best as she can.
Even though she works hard, she won't be able to send them to school. She cannot afford to buy even a pencil for her grandchildren, much less buy them textbooks and uniforms or pay their school fees. As she watched them grow, she knows their tiny hands will someday be callous from swinging garden hoes. Their potential will be wasted on mindless work. They will be trapped in poverty just as she has for her entire life. The thought breaks her heart.
This is a true story for too many grandmothers in Uganda. Too many of these courageous, hardworking women are stuck in the painful cycle of poverty.
The situation is dire but, because of your generosity, hope is springing up for many women like this grandmother. The micro-finance loans you give to your grandmothers empowers them to use their skills and talents to start businesses of their own. As entrepreneurs they can make more money--enough to take care of their grandchildren AND send them to school--and they can do work that is much less taxing on their bodies. Grandmothers can make baskets (like the ones featured in our Grandmother Basket Program!), they can open stores, market stalls, or many other successful businesses. All your amazing grandmothers need is an opportunity Thank you so much for giving it to them!
A grandmother can get her business started with a loan as little as $20 USD. That's less than a pizza!
Looking for an opportunity to see more of your grandmothers succeed?
GlobalGiving's first Bonus Day of 2016 is coming up soon!
Wednesday, March 16th starting at 9:00am (Eastern)
Every donation will be matched!
It's a pro-rated match day, which means that every project will get a portion of the matching funds based on how much they raised. Here is the explanation for how they will distribute matching funds: (amount of funds you raise/amount of total funds raised on Bonus Day) x $75,000 = Matching funds we receive!
