Sophia Munro has been volunteering at Yayasan Usaha Mulia since September 2016. She assisted in program developments, setting up the monitoring and evaluation tools and working on Library, Pre-School and Adult Education program with our staff. This is her story about YUM Community Library in Cipanas, West Java:
Since starting I have been on several visits to YUM community library, and have seen the good work YUM is doing first hand. Children are very happy and enthusiastic about coming to YUM, and the library is always filled with both parents and children, who read, play and build social skills. A real sense of community is established as parents have a chance to meet and get to know each other while bringing their children to the YUM Library.
As part of a new project which I have been helping YUM managers plan and implement, soon there will be more resources for parents and children at the YUM Library. This new project involves running monthly education workshops for parents, meaning parents who accompany their children to the library and preschool can now participate in a project aimed directly at them. This project will also involve some small renovations of library facilities, and also updating library materials, including more materials for parents.
Parenting classes will cover important topics like health, nutrition, how to support children’s education, and parenting skills, and library materials and facilities will be upgraded to address the changing needs of the community. This project addresses the need to involve parents in projects, and engage them in their children’s education, as this creates the best results. It has been very interesting to learn about the needs of YUMs beneficiaries while helping to plan this project.
Teachers and librarians working at YUMs community centres come from the communities they serve. This means that is a truly holistic and sustainable approach to community development. YUM's work is coming from a strong commitment to the fact that education is the key to community development.
