Quality Education for Children in Indonesia

As we want our library not only as a place to provide knowledge by providing books, we deliver some activities designed to develop the library member skills especially in preparing the children to face their future competitions.  Now, we are focusing to provide activities at YUM community library in Cipanas to meet the 21st-century skill requirements.

Science club is one of the favorite activities at the library,  it takes place every Friday afternoon with Ms. Vina and Ms. Agnes as the tutor.  It is aimed to encourage the children’s interest and understanding about science through simple experiments.  The experiments include doing an observation on plantation and animals in the surrounding area and learning about the human body anatomy with the props etc.  The children always feel enthusiast each time they come to enroll in the activity and enjoy doing the experiment rather than listen to the theory. Our tutors are always very selective in choosing the tools and materials.  They only use materials that are safe for the children. Should they have to use sharp and/or flammable materials, it will be done under strict supervision.

Thanks for your continuous support to this project, YUM is able to provide qualified tutors, good materials and tools to support the Science Club activity.   Through this letter, YUM also wants to express how grateful we are for your kind support for us for this entire year. Celebrating Indonesia’s Independence Day in August is one of the most highlighted and anticipated activities this year. Many competitions, both fun and educative for all, are held for two whole days during afterschool hours, at YUM’s site in Cipanas. They include drawing and coloring, marble race, dropping the pencil in the bottle, eating Keropoek, moving food using chopsticks and many such delightful activities.

Prior to announcing the winner and distribution of awards, children were given an opportunity to spontaneously showcase their talent on the spot and displayed outstanding confidence while they sang and danced in front of the crowd. The event finally ended with distribution of awards, which the children had been eagerly waiting for. There were 246 children that participated in this event and it was organized jointly by the staff of YUM and tutors from the Tutoring and Remedial Class project.

We also conducted competitions for the Pre-school students, which was held on a different day from that of senior students. The competition was designed to enhance their overall development and stimulate their motor skills, like putting on the school uniform, moving the balls with cups and water movement race. The students also learnt teamwork, as they had to be in various groups for certain competitions. All of them received small rewards as a token of recognition of their bravery and participation in the event.
