The tutoring activities have been the highlight of YUM’s education program during the pandemic. The program focuses on helping students in early grades of primary school who struggle with reading, writing, and basic math. Since March 2020, schools have been closed and students in rural Indonesia can only communicate sporadically with their teachers and learn mostly on their own.

Since the start of the program in July 2020, thanks to many different donors, this activity has been able to help more than 400 students. These numbers are possible because YUM is collaborating with 5 primary schools and 14 local teachers in our area of Cipanas, West Java. Due to the local schools’ enthusiasm for this program, the tutoring activity is considered as an after-school activity and scheduled after school hours. Tutoring takes place either in the school or at one of the teacher’s houses. Each group is divided into small learning groups consisting of a maximum of 10 students with 1 teacher.

Let’s hear what Miss Fatonah said about this program. She is a teacher at SDN Cibadak and teaches the 1st grade class:

“In my opinion, the tutoring and remedial program held by YUM has been a great help for us. The 1st-grade students who have never been in the classroom and met with their class teacher before can now have the experience even though it is only in a small group and for a short time. Being in a small group makes it easier for me to be more focused on the student who is struggling with numbers and simple math. After two months of this program, I can proudly say that most of my students are able to do simple math when before this, they still found it hard to count after 100.”

Thanks to your support, YUM is able to give more children an opportunity to take part in this program. The program is now not only recognized as YUM’s program but is now a part of the wider community by our partnerships with schools in the area.

Focusing on child rights and child protection in difficult times

The pandemic has hit hard on families living in rural areas. Many families have either lost or seen a drastic reduction in their income. This affects the children greatly. The Indonesian Commission for Child Protection reports an already increased number of cases of child labor and early age marriage due to the hardships that families are currently enduring. From our field workers who talk with teachers and parents, the YUM staff found out that many students are considering dropping out of school. Some have also started working outside of school hours to help with the family’s income.

We see this is an urgent time to talk and promote Child Rights and Child Protection related to the current condition. A family is the first line of protection for children. Beyond the family environment, schools and communities are also responsible for building a safe and child-friendly environment. It is important that children are fully protected so that they can survive, grow, learn and develop to their fullest potential.

YUM works very closely with around 30 schools in West Java and Central Kalimantan. Therefore, we found that teachers would be a good entry point in discussing these important issues as they are communicating with students and parents on a daily basis. In compliance with COVID-19 health and safety protocols, we started organizing workshops with schools in Bukit Batu, Central Kalimantan. From teachers to school custodians, a total of 76 participants from 7 schools attended the workshop. Each school was limited to a maximum of 12 participants in order to keep a safe distance between each participant.

The workshop is aimed to ensure those who are in direct contact with children understand the importance of child protection, as well as being able to identify and minimize violations from happening. The importance of child rights and child protection cannot be understated. We hope to reach more schools and community leaders in the future.

Ensuring child rights and child protection is only one of the ways to keep our students learning during this pandemic. On another note, we had the honor to be interviewed by GlobalGiving for their recent article called "Education in COVID-19 era" in which YUM’s Executive Director, Vanessa Reksodipoetro, was one of the contributors. YUM'S project has been chosen as GlobalGiving's January 2021 Project Of The Month!

Happy New Year!

We wish you a new year filled with peace, joy, and prosperity! We survived 2020 and thrived because of your continued support. We were able to exceed our goals and expand our services because of the generosity and commitment of people like you.

As we begin this new year, we are thrilled to inform you that Yayasan Usaha Mulia's project https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/help-promote-good-reading-habits-in-kalimantan/ has been chosen as GlobalGiving's Project of the Month for January 2021! Our project to enhance the quality of literacy and education in Central Kalimantan was duly selected from a pool of more than 5,000 nonprofit projects in 170+ countries. Nearly 3,000 donors come together and make monthly donations to keep the Project of the Month going. This extra support means the world to us—and to the children living in Bukit Batu, Central Kalimantan.

The project in Central Kalimantan is similar to the one you are supporting in Cipanas, West Java. YUM continues to facilitate small group learning sessions by providing tutoring activities for primary school students who struggle in reading, writing, and math. In Cipanas, with the collaboration of 3 schools and 9 teachers in the area, YUM has run tutoring sessions for almost 100 students. Meanwhile in Bukit Batu, due to the vast area and lack of transportation from home to YUM's premises, we were only able to support 1 school, 3 teachers, and 50 students. But we are optimistic that we will be able to reach out to more students in the area as more schools participate in this program. Hopefully, by the end of this year, we will be able to achieve our target to ensure children in rural areas keep learning and achieve basic reading, writing, and maths.

We look forward to continuing our efforts and reaching out for more children to help this year and we can only do so with your continued compassion and generous support.
