Library's Progress in the Early Years

By Aris Miarti | Fundraising Officer

Thank you, see you and good luck! :)
Thank you, see you and good luck! :)

YUM Library Kalimantan project had to undergo a change in the turn of 2013 to 2014. On December 2013, YUM Kalimantan Program Manager– Bapak Rusdi – resigned, because he had to move to another city outside Kalimantan Island. It meant also that his wife – Ibu Mariwati –was not be able to help any longer with the different library activities. Usually, Ibu Mariwati would handle drawing and coloring activities, art and craft activities, games, watching movies as well as assisting Isna – YUM’s librarian who handles library lending system and library inventory.

Therefore, on December 19th, 2013, YUM Kalimantan held a farewell party in honor of the cooperation, support and sense of family that has been tied for more than 5 years, between Bapak Rusdi and Ibu Mariwati with the staff and children at YUM Kalimantan. Although we are very sad about this farewell, we have to let them go and we wish them a successful and happy life in their new life chapter. Thank you so much for your help Bapak Rusdi and Ibu Mariwati and May God bless you always.

In January 2014, we had 4 visitors from Youth Exchange of Indonesia – Canada (PPIK) to help in the library. Marina, Iin, Hansko and Aiden helped out in daily library activities, especially in the English classes on Tuesday and singing activities. The children were really excited with their presence. Watching movies, arts and crafts activities, games, drawing and coloring activities are still the favorite activities among the children.

In order to increase children’s interest to visit the library, we held an exciting Hula Hoop free style competition in February. As much as 27 children joined the competition from kindergarten until Junior High School children and we chose 2 winners from each level as appreciation for their effort. Besides this, we also help the children who want to participate in ‘Looking for a Star Competition’ in Sei Gohong district in Kalimantan through dancing activities. They will have the competition in March and will be the star of Sei Gohong if they can win the competition. Hopefully they can make it!

Besides library activities, library inventory has also increased, as can be seen by the number of books and library members. On October 2013, we only had 6.841 books and 423 library members, while on February 2014 we have 6.991 books and 439 library members. Currently we are coordinating with YUM Head Office Jakarta to purchase more books, CDs, DVDs, arts and crafts material, etc., because we don’t have many qualified stores in Kalimantan to buy the books and materials .

Thank you for your donations, which facilitate the children in rural area by providing books, movies, arts and crafts activities and more interesting activities that improve their quality of life, especially in education.

Thank You!
