Imagination is an important part of childhood development. Through movies, films and songs, it’s possible to offer children experiences beyond what is within the confines of their immediate surroundings. Especially for the children of Bukit Batu, situated 30-50 kilometers from the city of Palangkaraya, imagination in the form of movies can help them to learn by identifying plots & characters, testing their memory, being inspired and accessing complimentary learning materials to what they study in the classroom.
At the YUM Community Library in Kalimantan, we use DVDs and CDs to introduce interesting topics such as health, science, art, English and environmental issues. Not to mention we also play the latest popular movies and songs. These activities take place twice a month. The children are always excited to find out what movie they will watch next. The closest movie theater is located 45 minutes from our library, in the city of Palangkaraya, but seldom do our beneficiaries have money to go to the movies. Most children would never have been to a movie theatre and so the YUM library is the best substitute available to them. After watching the movie, our librarian hosts group discussions mixed with games, to see how each of them interpreted the movie.
Here are a few things our beneficiaries have to say about Movie Time:
Satrio, 5th grade
“Every Friday afternoon, I go to the YUM Community Library to watch a movie. I love going to YUM because the place is beautiful. At YUM, I watch cowboy movies, Finding Nemo and Thomas & friends movies. Besides watching movies, my other favorite activities are drawing and coloring. “
Dara, 5th grade
“Friday afternoon is my favorite time at the YUM Library, because it’s Movie Time! Every movie is always good and impressive for me. My favorite movies are Kubo, Finding Nemo and Frozen. While watching movies, we have to be silent or else Kak Rusti (YUM’s Librarian) will ask us to play outside. Thank you YUM and everyone who has helped YUM to buy all these fun movies, so my friends and I can enjoy this activity.”
Movie time is a YUM Library activity which has a positive developmental impact for the local children. If you wish to continue helping this project, a $10 donation can help us add more educational material and improve our movie stock for more than 100 children in Bukit Batu, Central Kalimantan, who usually come to the library. Have a great week!
