Celebrating Indonesian Heritage & Culture

By Yolanda Utami Nilasari | Project Leader

Over 200 people came to Creativity Day
Over 200 people came to Creativity Day

Every year there is one event that the children of Bukit Batu, Central Kalimantan, always look forward to: Creativity Day. During this event, children can participate in various educational competitions to show their talents, such as coloring, poetry reading, arts and crafts, making puzzles and many more. We also have fun games such as hulahoop skills, playing football in sarongs (traditional cloth), bakiak racing (traditional slippers), and tug of war. Creativity Day motivates the children to be more confident, creative and able to work in a team.

This year the event was held in August, and the theme was “Indonesian Heritage and Culture”. We want to encourage the children to be more aware of local cultures, and work to help preserve it, especially the Dayak culture in Kalimantan. In Bukit Batu, not every family is originally from Kalimantan. Some of them are from Bali, Java, Sumatera and many other islands in Indonesia. Therefore, we also want children to keep in their mind that although they come from different places, being united in diversity is very important.

Though the day was filled with fun games and competitions, it was also an opportunity for everyone, young and old, from various regions of Indonesia, to gather together and celebrate learning and diversity!

Would you like to help more students from Kalimantan to take advantage of this amazing project? GlobalGiving is helping us get more donations this end of year. By donating on #GivingTuesday (Tuesday 29 November), your donation will be matched by 50%! The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has generously provided $500,000 in matching funds for #GivingTuesday, enabling GlobalGiving to match donations up to the first $1 million raised! Matching will begin at midnight EST and conclude at 11:59:59 pm EST or when funds run out. This is the largest amount of donations GlobalGiving has matched in one day!

If that's not enough to be excited about, GlobalGiving will also be matching new recurring donations starting from November 29th until December 31st! A generous anonymous donor has agreed to match new monthly donations at 200% up to $100 per donor

We're extremely excited about these opportunities and we hope that you are too! Please help us spread the word to your family and friends. Happy holiday from us all! :)
