How a rural library helps improve social life in a community. Can you imagine a large rural community where students do not have access to books? In the community we serve , called Santa Teresita de Don Diego, until recently, there was not a library, or a book shop, or books in the public school , except simple text books. Most of the parents were illiterate, or almost. Most of them never read a book to their children. Never bought a book for them. Now with the library that our Education Center put there, thanks to donations, they have three thousand books. Together with an ongoing programs to teach how to read, and develop reading skills in all levels- In Fundación Comunitaria Don Diego, we can see now the benefits .
The Power of Reading Skills in Transforming the community of Don Diego.
In rural communities, where access to educational resources is often limited, fostering reading skills among young people can profoundly impact their intellectual growth and social environment. Reading is not just a gateway to knowledge; it is a transformative tool that cultivates critical thinking and serves as a shield against violence.
Enhancing Critical Thinking in our students Through Reading
Reading exposes young minds to diverse perspectives, ideas, and experiences beyond their immediate environment. By engaging with stories, essays, and informational texts, young people learn to question assumptions, analyze arguments, and explore complex issues. As they develop comprehension and reasoning skills, they gain the ability to discern facts from misinformation and construct well-informed opinions. This intellectual empowerment enables them to approach problems thoughtfully and consider multiple solutions—essential traits for critical thinking.
In this rural area, where traditional norms and limited exposure to alternative viewpoints may dominate, reading equips youth with the cognitive tools to challenge stereotypes, think independently, and engage in meaningful dialogue.
We expect that violence will be less likely in this community
