The impact of school closures during the pandemic has affected the children and also the parents in our rural community.
To support them our Foundation has two psychologist, Barbara Herz and Rocio Arredondo, to implement workshops, on self esteem, prevention of intrafamily violence, communication, etc and provide therapy. Also , our team participates in the State network for prevention of suicide.
We asked Barbara and Rocio to tell our readers what they do and why.
During the pandemic mental health has become an urgent issue. Not only has it been a devastating worldwide event, it is well documented that it has increased significantly pervasive mental disorders. Individuals, families and communities have suffered great losses; lives, economic security, social interaction, jobs, health. It is a worldwide concern.
In our country, and specifically at the community of Don Diego, the effects have been very similar to the rest of the world. The people in communities like ours, depend on each other for support. When many individuals in this community are suffering, the social and family support is not enough. Professional mental health workers need to be involved. There should be support groups, psychoeducational workshops, individual psychotherapy and community outreach programs that use the community's own human resources to encourage resilience. It is a well known fact that resilience is built and reinforced by positive community. Unfortunately the less resilient individuals , don't ask for help. This is why it is as a society, our responsibility to reach out and help those who are less likely to help themselves.
As the saying goes, it takes a community to raise a child, and in this case, the community needs help.
Psychologist Barbara Herz.
Addressing mental health in the community implies intervening not only in individual health but taking into account all those who live in it.
For this, it is important to understand that human beings are made up of dimensions (biological, psychological, social, emotional and spiritual) so we cannot stop seeing any of them because then we would be seeing people in an incomplete way.
That is why we work and consider it vitally important to approach them from a multidisciplinary manner, implementing activities that generate an improvement in their well-being and quality of life in all their spheres of life.
It is important to prevent mental disorders through communication in order to educate and encourage help seeking.
We are looking forward to implement more and more:
Healthy development of children, adolescents and families.
Better family management.
Support for mothers in crisis.
Improvement in the well-being and quality of life of each person.
Fight the stigma and discrimination of those who face mental disorders in order to promote the dignity and respect of each one of the people.
Promote even more sports
Cover the problems of childhood – youth, adulthood and old age as well as areas of addictions.
Reduce suicidal risks.
