Thank you for standing in solidarity with Haiti’s midwives as they address sexual violence and teen pregnancy through a holistic approach that promotes body autonomy, gender equality and condemns gender-based violence. By providing sexual and reproductive education they are empowering Haiti’s youth. Since the beginning of this year, your support has made a difference for 156 young people (girls and boys aged 10 to 17), who participated in interactive learning sessions on early pregnancy prevention and gender-based violence.
Many children learn best through visuals. Integrating movies into lessons not only enhances their learning but also introduces them to diverse perspectives, broadens their worldview, and helps them appreciate their role in society. Here’s what one of the midwives had to say:
“We watched a movie about a 10-year-old girl who was harrassed and raped by her teacher—a man her mother deeply trusted. Her mother, a busy single parent, was rarely home due to her demanding job, leaving the girl primarily in the care of her aunt. She longed for a voice but felt unheard, as neither her mother nor her aunt truly listened to her. As a result, she struggled to focus in class, and her grades continued to decline. When I asked the class why the girl was so deeply affected, a 12-year-old boy responded:
“When your parents are not present for you as a child you lack affection and quality time like playing together and love. When you lack those, you can’t do anything good in life."
We then had a meaningful discussion about staying true to oneself despite challenges at home and in the community, the importance of body autonomy, and how and where to seek help. This approach to teaching gives me greater hope for their future, allowing them to learn through different cultures, broaden their perspectives, and realize that they are not alone in their journey as teenagers.”
Providing Haiti’s youth with a safe space to learn and build community is invaluable in shaping a stronger future. Through the "Youth Changing Haiti One Tree at a Time" initiative, we can continue offering accurate and culturally relevant education on health and nutrition—while also equipping young participants and their families with sustainable food sources right in their own backyards. Trees not only provide long-term nutrition, but address climate change, help combat food insecurity and create opportunities for families to generate income.
Trees + Midwives = A Win-Win Solution!
