Youth Changing Haiti One Tree At A Time

Imagine what a family could do if they owned five fruit and vegetable trees? Let’s take coconuts for example. Coconuts are superfoods and offer a great source of delicious ingredients. 

• Coconut water promotes detoxification and hydration through their antioxidants and electrolytes. 
• Coconut milk is tasty and nutritious and can help fight viruses and bacteria, reduce inflammation and boost heart health. 

Haiti is known for its culinary cuisine. Coconut milk is  also used  for cooking healthy meals. Here are a few of the most popular  uses:

• Coconut meat is the white inner flesh of the coconut and can be eaten as is. It is a great snack and a source of fiber, vitamin C, manganese, iron and more. 
•  Shredded coconut is widely used in Haitian cuisine. A childhood favorite treat for many  and well known on the island is coconut fudge known as Kokoye Graje. 
• Coconut is also used in other dishes such as rice, soups and pudding

Now picture having not only one coconut tree but a variety of other trees right in your backyard. Access to nutritious, organically grown fruits and vegetables  has a huge positive ripple  effect on one's health as well as the environment.

Haitian midwives are in the optimal position to provide accurate & culturally appropriate education on health & nutrition to Haiti's youth. Trees are a sustainable source of nutrition, address food insufficiency and are a way to increase family income.  

So… Trees + Midwives = a Win Win solution!

While teaching a class of grade school students about general health and nutrition, Midwife Aline asked, “How many of you had breakfast before coming to school today?” It broke her heart when a majority of the class raised their hands. Some youth often go with minimal to no food daily. 

Midwives are in the optimal position to provide accurate & culturally appropriate education on health & nutrition to Haiti's youth.There is a dire need to access nutritious, organically grown fruits & vegetables.

Healthy eating in childhood promotes proper growth & development and reduces the risk of developing certain health conditions (high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, etc). Trees are a sustainable source of nutrition, address food insufficiency and are a way to increase family income. Planting trees reverses soil erosion & builds climate resilience. Organically grown nutritious fruits & vegetables are full of vitamins & minerals and maintain health to enhance a child’s ability to learn. 

Since launching our Tree Campaign in April, your kind donations have provided invaluable education to youth in Haiti who participate in our Midwifery-led youth groups in the north and south of Haiti. Your support also helped reach some of the most vulnerable children who live in and wander the streets. Here’s a glimpse of your impact:

North: 

• 94 youth received education on first aid (wound care, drowning, choking, and basic CPR) and each received a basic first aid kit
• 30 youth received education on nutrition, sexual & reproductive health, and gender-based violence 

South: 

• 159 youth received education on nutrition and sexual & reproductive health, and gender-based violence
• Children who live in and wander the streets received education on hygiene, sexual & reproductive health, family planning, and gender-based violence.  

What’s missing?.... Trees!

We look forward to the fruits of our collective efforts in reaching our goal of providing 2,500 trees to 500 youth & their families ensuring that they have nutritional food sources right in their backyards PLUS receive quality health education from Haiti’s midwives.
