Transforming the lives of marginalized women

With the aim of supporting the women and girls who experienced violence and developed mental health and psychosocial issues, this campaign was initiated by KOSHISH. This campaign supports to lead the quality life of those women and girls and being included in the community on an equal basis as others.

The transit care service of KOSHISH has been in operation for the emergency psychosocial care and treatment of the abandoned women and girls who underwent through the violence and living with mental health issues. Those women were able to get recovery throught your generous support raised via The GlobalGiving. So far the campaign started, KOSHISH has been able to support 79 women with mental health issues. Since those women who are in recovery phase required to stay for an average of 3 months of duration at the transit care service, they require food, medicines, counseling and proper care. KOSHISH would like to appeal you to join your hands to support those women.

Success Story:

I am Durga (changed name). I live in Udaypur with my five children. My children are world to me. Twelve years back, two of my daughters started experiencing mental health conditions which crashed my world and my family scattered. I sought help from traditional healers but everything went in vain. Unwillingly, I was obligated to lock my daughters in a room where I used to tie my younger daughter’s leg with a rope; imagine what might have gone through a mother’s heart. After many dark years, I got to know about KOSHISH from my neighbor. After few assessment, KOSHISH started treatment of my daughters in Transit Care Services. Initially, I had no trust on the treatment and I was hesitated to send my daughters. KOSHISH staffs used to communicate with me about my daughter’s health on regular basis which helped me to overcome my hesitation and lack of trust toward KOSHISH.

My daughters spent four months in transit care and their mental health condition improved. I cried with happiness, looking at their transformation in mere time of four months. They were no more the same miserable girls. They look happy and different.

My elder daughter is recovering faster than my younger one but I am more positive towards their recovery now. My elder daughter supports me in every household works and vegetable farming. She takes care of the home in my absence. Whereas, I am relieved that my younger daughter can at least take care of herself now. My daughters are living examples for everyone in the community who once thought that my daughters are burden. This was all possible with the effort of my neighbor and KOSHISH. I will always be grateful to them.

KOSHISH has been providing short-term rehabilitation service to the most abandoned women who are suffering from violence and living with mental health issues through it's Tansit Centre in Lalitpur. Those women were able to get recovery throught your generous support raised via The GlobalGiving. Since September-November, 2019, KOSHISH was able to help 21 women living with severe mental health issues. So far, KOSHISH has been able to support 78 women with mental health issues through this project.

There are many women who are locked, chained and abandoned in the streets due to having mental health problem and faced violence, and they are subjected to humanrights violation. KOSHISH would like to appeal you to join your hands to support for the cause.

Case Story: Helpless woman with prone to violence rescued

A 25 years old woman, Binu Tamang (pseudonym) was rescued in October 25, 2019 from Lamjung district. KOSHISH was informed about her condition by the local community people as she was prone to violence while wandering in the streets. She had been experiencing mental health problems from last 12 years. The primary symptoms were sitting alone, awkward laughing, wandering aimlessly, talking to self and lack of conscience. She had no concern and affection towards her children and husband. Her hygiene was deteriorating continuously and she had no conscience of eating regularly. The community people shared that her mother and brother also had similar mental health condition. Few years back her mother passed away. Her brother still has the problems and no treatment has been provided yet.

In the transit home, she has been provided with the psychiatric consultation. Now she is under medication. Her personal hygiene is being maintained by the caregivers at transit home. The staffs are providing care and support to her. Hopefully, she will recover soon and we will reintegrate her back in her own family.

KOSHISH's work depends upon your support

With the support of the funds raised through Globalgiving, KOSHISH has been able to help 13 women living with mental health issues during June - August, 2019.

KOSHISH is providing emergency mental health and psychosocial support to those women who are living with mental health issues and are prone to violence. Those women were brought to KOSHISH's Transit Home to provide specialized mental health treatment and psychological support. KOSHISH's Social Workers visited with the family members of the beneficiaries and also provided them psychoeducation for creating supportive environment to live them with dignity after their recovery and reintegration.

So far as this campaign started, KOSHISH has been able to help 57 women with mental health issues. There are many women who are locked, chained and abandoned in the streets due to having mental health problem and faced violence, and they are subjected to humanrights violation. KOSHISH would like to appeal you to join your hands to support for the cause.

Success Story of a woman survived with mental health issues and violence

31 years old Nilima (pseudonym) was found on the street of Nawalparasi with an infant attached with umbilical cord on her lap. She was rescued by police who brought her in the nearby hospital and treated her accordingly. The doctors found her with a severe mental health problem and referred to the KOSHISH's rehabilitation services for the treatment. During the time of rehabilitation on September 21, 2018, she showed violent and aggressive behaviors. She didn’t care about her son and if given something to eat then she would throw food at the baby. Because of these behaviors, the baby was reared in the childcare unit of Prithvi Chandra Hospital for the time being.

After getting the therapeutical and counseling services in KOSHISH, her mental health condition improved. During conversations, it was found that she lived in Bangladesh and had no clue of how she came to Nepal but she knew that she has a baby boy. She has 7 daughters back home. Her relation with her husband was not good as he abused her for not having a son.

With the information she provided, KOSHISH staffs tried to search for the address given by her on the internet and found that to be true. KOSHISH coordinate with Bangladesh embassy for locating her address in Bangladesh and responded positively. After rehabilitation services, she was reunited with her son and she lived in an organization called Manab Sewa Ashram with her son. And during the contact with the family members on Bangladesh, it was found that her husband had passed away and her daughters were staying on her maternal home with her mother. With an effort from KOSHISH and the Bangladesh embassy, she was able to return back at her home in Bangladesh on July 22, 2019. And while returning back she appreciated KOSHISH for the support and said 'Bhalobasey' (thank you in Bengali) to one of staff of KOSHISH while meeting her at the airport. The embassy also appreciated the efforts of KOSHISH in helping Nilima despite being from across the border.
