The third phase of COVID-19 pandemic outbreak with the increasing rate of infection in the whole country. Even during this situation, KOSHISH has been continuously providing psychosocial support and care to women and girls with mental health condition and psychosocial disability (MHPSD). Through the generous support raised through GlobalGiving, we were able to provide specialized support to 21 beneficiaries.
At first the beneficiaries were accommodated in quarantine house of KOSHISH to maintain safety and after confirmation of no transmission of infection they were transfer to main emergency care service center of KOSHISH for further support. In the emergency care service center, the beneficiaries receive holistic treatment including both psychosocial support and psychiatric consultation along with involvement in therapeutic activities. Among 21 beneficiaries, 13 have been reintegrated in their own family after recovery. During follow-up, the mental health condition of all beneficiaries was found to be improving; they were involved in daily activities and were in continuous counseling services &psychiatric follow-up. The outreach team has identified and assessed more number of beneficiaries who required specialized psychosocial support which is only possible through helping hands.
Success Story
Support brings positive changes
For the past twelve years, Mina Magar (pseudonym) struggled with mental health conditions. Most of her young life, she was despised by her family and society. The problem was exacerbated by alienation and the use of various derogatory tags by her society. She was expelled from school due to her mental health condition. Not just Mina, but even her younger sister was prohibited from school. Mina’s mother came into contact with KOSHISH when she participated in a psychosocial and mental health orientation program organized by KOSHISH. During the home visit, it was discovered that her family was unable to take her to the hospital on time due to their poor financial condition.
As Mina’s condition worsened, she was brought to the emergency care home of KOSHISH and provided specialized care and counseling services. Slowly but surely, after several sessions of rapport building and therapeutic sessions, Mina’s condition started improving. Mina was reintegrated into her family after a 2-month long assisted care and support in the emergency care home. Mina is putting in a great deal of effort and dedication in her rehabilitation. She has started doing her work and paying attention to her physical hygiene. Keeping in view the needs and skills of the family, KOSHISH distributed them goats to sustain their livelihood. KOSHISH also coordinated with rural municipality to ensure her reenrollment in school. Mina’s journey to rehabilitation has brought a great deal of optimism to her family. Positive changes have taken place in her personal, family, and social aspects. KOSHISH is consistently reaching out to Mina’s family for regular follow-ups.
