Increasing need of mental health service
KOSHISH has been providing short-term specialized psychosocial support to abandoned and marginalized women with mental health conditions and psychosocial disabilities (MHCPD). Overall 74% of the beneficiaries received in emergency care service centers had MHCPD due to gender-based violence. Through the generous support raised through GlobalGiving, we were able to provide specialized support to almost 125 beneficiaries in 2022 only.
Among 124 beneficiaries, 67 beneficiaries have been reintegrated into their own family and community after recovery. and remaining are receiving holistic treatment including both psychosocial support and psychiatric consultation along with involvement in therapeutic activities in the emergency service center of KOSHISH. Uopn followup, the condition of reintegrated beneficiaries were found to be improving. Some required additional livlihood support and are also in continuous counseling services. The outreach team has identified broader group of communities with large number of individuals who require specialist psychosocial assistance, which can only be provided by helping hands.
Narmaya’s Transformed Life
Narmaya’s life has transformed after receiving psychosocial support from KOSHISH. Narmaya (72) from Tanahun lived with her family, which included her husband, a daughter, and a son. She was closest to her daughter, so when she got married and left home, Narmaya felt isolated. Over the years, she developed a mental health condition in which she started hearing strange noises and becoming fearful. As her mental health worsened, she started isolating herself from her family and became severely distressed. Unaware of her mental health condition, her family took her to traditional healers, which proved futile. When the neighbors started noticing Narmaya’s behavior, they contacted KOSHISH and informed them about her condition. KOSHISH team went to visit her for observation. After the team realized the severity of her situation, they sensitized her family about her mental health condition and offered professional help. KOSHISH team started visiting her regularly for psychosocial support.
Throughout the intervention period, Narmaya received counseling and learned about stress management, breathing techniques, calming steps, and other self-care practices for her wellbeing. KOSHISH also encouraged her family to look after her, pay close attention to her, and be
emotionally available. Throughout a year-long psychosocial intervention from KOSHISH, Narmaya’s mental health gradually improved. Over time, she started supporting her family, returning to her daily activities, and reintegrating into society. Nowadays, she has begun goat farming to keep herself busy while also earning income. Narmaya’s family and neighbors all appreciate KOSHISH for their support. One of the neighbors stated, “We all thought Narmaya’s life was over, but thanks to KOSHISH, she has a new life.” Narmaya’s intervention has also taught the locals to avoid traditional healers for psychosocial problems and instead seek help from hospitals or counselors.
