Celebrating International Women's Day online
By Janet Chapman | Project Leader

The rural government schools in Tanzania we support often suffer from a lack of teachers, particularly in science and maths. They generally have very few books or educational resources. Motivated students who want to become tomorrows’ doctors and teachers cannot succeed without passing exams. Therefore we provide offline content on flash drives, along with reconditioned projectors to allow teachers to display this to classes using their personal laptops. We train teachers and students on the best way to use technology to supplement their existing resources to enable students to succeed.
However many schools do not have access to electricity, and if they do suffer frequent power cuts. Therefore we were delighted to recently partner with Engineers Without Borders Norway to bring a solar power and router installation to Tumaini Open School, just in time for International Womens’ Day.
This means they can reliably use their laptops and projector to access learning materials and collaborate with other schools without fear of power outages.
Thank you again for your support.

Promoting resilience with online yoga
By Janet CHAPMAN | Project Leader

One our schools have better internet connections and a tablet or laptop they are able to participate in many new learning experiences including remote Yoga lessons over Zoom run by our friends My Little Zen. My Little Zen is an organisation which combines yoga and technology in an aim to connect communities in Africa. They use a fusion of Karma Yoga which focuses on compassion and selfless actions and Hatha Yoga which centres on keeping the mind and body strong.
Yoga has been shown to improve both mental and physical health. It encourages us to nurture our bodies, and improves our strength and resilience. It also increases self-esteem, reduces stress and anxiety and improves flexibility and balance to name a few.
These classes are great for the students to come together and learn new skills. It has been amazing to see them improve and increase their confidence with some girls now leading the classes and developing their own routines. This also provide skills for the future and the potential to support their families and local communities.
Students in remote rural schools often have few connections with people outside their districts, so technology really can become a bridge to widen their experience and aspiration.
Thank you for supporting this project and seasons greeting to you and your family.

Girls excluded by pregnancy learn how to code
By Janet CHAPMAN | Project Leader

Tanzania Development Trust has been working with Tumaini Open School in Tabora to ensure that girls excluded from education by pregnancy get a second chance at an education. Through better connectivity and refurbished laptops they can now access online materials and attend webinars such as Inspiring Girls to widen their horizons and widen their curriculum.
To take this one step further, we have now started working with Code2Connect to teach Digital Literacy and Coding via Zoom.
The girls and young women, who in previous schools had no chance to use a computer or get online are very excited about this opportunity, and keen to supplement their skills.
Grace says "I come from a small village, and my previous school had no computers, so it is amazing to me to be able to see and communicate with people from all over the world via a laptop, I thank God for this opportunity".
So thank you again for enabling such opportunities by your generosity.
