Nourishing 1100 children of the Wixarika Community

At ONI, we are very pleased and excited to be part of this amazing community of GlobalGiving; so we want to share with you some highlights of what we are doing and where we are doing it, so you can be an ally of our work.

One of the communities where we are working is Santa Catarina, it is located in the municipality of Mezquitic, in Jalisco, and is one of the 4 most important ceremonial and religious centers for the Wixárika people.

It is estimated that around 140 people live in the community; around 90 of them are children. ONI, for the las 3 months, with the support of our donors, has attended those 90 kids and 65 more from other nearby communities for a total of 155 children. All of them received nutritional follow up and the nutritional complement NutriONI. Some of them were diagnosed with undernourishment and received special recommendations from our nutritionist; also this week, our team is at the community testing the children for anemia, those who present low hemoglobin will receive iron treatment in January and will be tested again in 6 months, hopefully they’ll be better then!

Conociendo la comunidad de Santa Catarina

Querido donante:

En ONI estamos muy agradecidos y emocionados por pertenecer a la comunidad de GlobalGiving; por lo que queremos compartir contigo algunos datos relevantes sobre lo que estamos haciendo y dónde lo estamos haciendo para que sigas siendo un aliado de nuestro trabajo.

Una de las comunidades que estamos atendiendo es Santa Catarina, se ubica en el municipio de Mezquitic, en Jalisco, y es uno de los 4 centros ceremoniales y religiosos más importantes para la población Wixárika.

Se estima que cerca de 140 personas habitan en la comunidad, de los cuáles 90 son niños. ONI los últimos 3 meses, con el apoyo de nuestro donantes, ha atendido a éstos 90 niños más otros 65 provenientes de comunidades cercanas con un total de 155 niños. Todos ellos recibieron seguimiento nutricional y el complemento alimenticio NutriONI. Algunos de ellos fueron diagnosticados con desnutrición y recibieron asesoría nutricional especial por parte de nuestro nutriólogo; ésta semana, nuestro equipo se encuentra en la comunidad realizando pruebas de hemoglobina a los niños, quienes presenten anemia recibirán un tratamiento de hierro en Enero y repetirán la prueba a los 6 meses, ¡esperamos que para entonces estén mejor!
