2018 has been a very difficult year for Venezuela and especially for our students. As of May, inflation has skyrocketed to levels beyond what any family budget can afford. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates that inflation will reach up to 1,000,000% by the end of 2018.
Our students, who come from families of poor financial conditions, have to struggle daily with food shortages and are forced to make long queues to buy basic products (often at an over price), with the lack of public transportation (they are forced to walk long distances to get to their schools), lack of medical attention and medicines (many of them can not afford the costs of corrective lenses or medicines and in some cases surgical interventions since they lack the appropriate medical insurance).
To attend this situation, the foundation has been making monthly increases to the stipend and assuming the cost of enrollment to students who did not have that benefit. Despite our efforts, we have suffered several student losses that for family reasons (especially financial problems) have decided to drop out of college. However, in recent weeks we have incorporated new students (stories that we include in this report) that have already started their college education. By October 2018 we have made agreements with the Andrés Bello Catholic University - UCAB to include 10 new students of education in our scholarship program. Signature of the agreements is scheduled for October of this year.
We present the stories of four young individuals, who despite great difficulties and obstacles they encountered along the way, have decided to strive for a better future.
Armando and Angelo

Armando, 24, and Angelo, 21, are two brothers who come from a humble and hard-working family and live with their parents, Francisco and Crismary, in the city of Caracas. They graduated from high school at the Gregorio Mac Gregor Technical School where they obtained the Bachelor's Degree in Electronics.
To continue their studies in the area, both began at the Santiago Mariño University the career of Electronic Engineering. However, due to strike problems in the university, insecurity and finally the high costs of enrollment, Armando and Angelo dropped out and started to work to help with the family economy, a task that, due to their scarce professional training was practically impossible.
In view of the situation and driven by his father, they began to carry out the necessary procedures to migrate to another country in Latin America in search of better opportunities.
Through one of our tutors who works in the same company as the father of Armando and Angelo, and thanks to the agreement that exists between the Fundacion Oportunidad y Futuro and the Jesus Obrero University Institute - IUJO, it was possible for both brothers to start studying again the career in Superior Technician in Electronics and discarded the idea of moving to another country.
After signing of the agreements, on July 9, 2018, they began to study the first of the six semesters of their chosen career, during which time they will have the support of their tutor Rafael García.
Brayan

Brayan is 20-year-old and lives in Caracas with his parents, Reinaldy and Norelys, and his brother Reinaldy, who is 13 years old. In 2014 he graduated from high school at the Agustiniano San Judas Tadeo school with the fifth best average of his class and thanks to his excellent academic performance he was accepted at the School of Economic and Social Sciences of the UCV.
Since he was a child, Brayan has been an athlete, especially in soccer, a sport he has practiced with different clubs and with which he has participated in countless national competitions. Currently, he plays for the varsity soccer team at the Central University of Venezuela category sub-20.
Brayan arrived at the foundation in May of this year through one of our tutors who, seeing the risk of leaving college because of the need to go out to work to help his family financially, brought up the possibility of helping him. After fulfilling all the requirements and an excellent interview, he started as a grant holder of the foundation in June 2018. He is currently in the fifth semester of Administration and Accounting at the Central University of Venezuela - UCV with an excellent record of qualifications. As a complement to his professional training, he studies English at the Centro Venezolano Americano, CVA; a course that is included in the scholarship that the foundation also paid to Brayan and is essential to guarantee his professional success.
His parents have been by his side from the beginning and his tutor, Eduardo Carrasquero, a professional with more than 25 years of experience in management and finance, will be at his side from now until he finishes his studies (scheduled for July of 2020). They will be pillars in Brayan career development now focus solely on his studies.
Moisés Alejandro
Language Therapy Student

My name is Moisés Alejandro, I was born in Caracas on July 16, 1999, I am 19 years old, my mother name is Elizabeth Cristina and my father Dennys, I also have a brother named Clement Fabian who is 13 years old. After my parents divorce, I lived with my mother and my brother in Los Teques, Edo Miranda. Currently because of studies, I live in Caracas from Monday to Friday. I decided to study Language Therapy thanks to one of my aunts who is an Occupational Therapist. She works with children with ASD (Autistic Spectrum Disorders). I got to shadow her and got to know her colleagues and among them where Language Therapists. Since I was enjoying this, I decided to pursue a career and I'm passionate about it. I work at CEPIA, a school for children with ASD performing the work of Language Therapist Assistant, in order to cover my basic needs. My mom does not receive an allowance from my father and this way I do not generate burdens to my Mom, since my brother depends on her ... "
Currently, Moisés is in the fourth semester of Language Therapy at the Venezuelan Institute of Hearing and Language - IVAL in Caracas and in October he starts the fifth semester. According to him, it would have been very difficult for him to enroll if it was not for the help he receives from the foundation.
Following the philosophy of Fundacion Oportunidad y Futuro, Moisés assigned tutor was Ms. Amelia Carrasquero de Vera, a professional with years of experience in Moises career. Amelia runs a center that brings together an interdisciplinary group of professionals dedicated to the care of children, adolescents and family groups. Thanks to her, Moisés had the opportunity to complete a 6-month internship in the Department of Language Therapy at her center, which is not only a requirement for his graduation, but also contributes significantly to Moises career development.

El año 2018 ha sido un año muy difícil para Venezuela y especialmente para nuestros estudiantes. A partir de mayo de este año la inflación se ha disparado a niveles superiores a los que ningún presupuesto familiar pueda afrontar. Nuestros estudiantes, la gran mayoría de escasos recursos económicos, tiene que luchar diariamente con la escasez de alimentos y se ven obligados a hacer largas colas para comprar los productos básicos (muchas veces con sobre precio), con la falta de transporte público (se ven obligados a caminar largas distancias para llegar a sus casas de estudios), falta de atención médica y medicamentos (muchos de ellos no pueden afrontar los costos de lentes correctores o medicamentos y en algunos casos intervenciones quirúrgicas ya que carecen del seguro médico apropiado).
A fin de ayudarlos a solventar esta situación, la fundación ha venido haciendo incrementos mensuales del monto de la manutención y asumiendo el costo de la matrícula a los estudiantes que no contaban con ese beneficio. A pesar de nuestros esfuerzos, hemos sufrido varias bajas de estudiantes que por razones familiares (especialmente problemas económicos) se han tenido que retirar. Sin embargo, en las últimas semanas hemos incorporado nuevos estudiantes (historias que incluimos en el presente informe) que ya comenzaron sus estudios y para octubre de 2018 hemos realizado acuerdos con la Universidad Católica Andrés Bello - UCAB para incluir 10 nuevos estudiantes de educación en nuestro programa de becas; la firma de los convenios está programada para octubre de este año.
A continuación, les presentamos las historias de cuatro jóvenes que, a pesar de las grandes dificultades y obstáculos que encontraron en el camino, decidieron seguir luchando por un mejor futuro.
Armando y Angelo
Estudiantes de Técnico en Electrónica
Instituto Universitario Jesús Obrero - IUJO

Armando de 24 años y Angelo de 21 son dos hermanos que provienen de una familia humilde y trabajadora y viven con sus padres, Francisco y Crismary, en la ciudad de Caracas. Se graduaron de bachiller en la Escuela Técnica Gregorio Mac Gregor donde obtuvieron el título de Bachiller Mención en Electrónica.
Para continuar sus estudios en el área, ambos comenzaron en la Universidad Santiago Mariño la carrera de Ingeniería Electrónica. Sin embargo, por problemas de paros en la universidad, de inseguridad y finalmente por los altos costos de la matrícula, Armando y Angelo se vieron obligados a abandonar los estudios y buscar trabajo para ayudar con la economía familiar, tarea que, debido a su escasa formación profesional, resultó prácticamente imposible.
En vista de la situación e impulsados por su padre, comenzaron a realizar los trámites necesarios para migrar a otro país de Latinoamérica en busca de mejores oportunidades.
A través de uno de nuestros tutores que trabaja en la misma empresa que el padre de Armando y Angelo, y gracias al acuerdo que existe entre la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro y el Instituto Universitario Jesús Obrero - IUJO, se consiguió que ambos hermanos comenzaran a estudiar nuevamente la carrera en Técnico Superior en Electrónica y desecharan la idea de mudarse a otro país.
Luego de la correspondiente firma de los convenios, el día 9 de julio de 2018 comenzaron a estudiar el primero de los seis semestres que dura la carrera que eligieron, periodo durante el cual contarán con el apoyo de su tutor Rafael García.
Brayan
Estudiante de Administración

Brayan, un joven de 20 años de edad vive en Caracas con sus padres, Reinaldy y Norelys, y su hermano Reinaldy de 13 años. En el año 2014 se gradúa de bachiller en el colegio Agustiniano San Judas Tadeo con el quinto mejor promedio de su promoción y gracias a su excelente desempeño académico es aceptado en la escuela de Ciencias Económicas y Sociales de la UCV.
Desde pequeño Brayan ha sido un gran deportista destacándose especialmente en el futbol (soccer), deporte que ha practicado con diferentes clubes y con los que ha participado en innumerables competencias a nivel nacional. Actualmente forma parte de la selección de futbol de la Universidad Central de Venezuela categoría sub-20.
Brayan llega a la fundación en mayo de este año a través de uno de nuestros tutores que, viendo el riesgo de que dejara los estudios por la necesidad de salir a trabajar para ayudar económicamente a su familia, nos planteó la posibilidad de ayudarlo. Luego de cumplir con todos los requisitos y de una excelente entrevista, comenzó como becario de la fundación en junio de 2018. Actualmente cursa quinto semestre de Administración y Contaduría en la Universidad Central de Venezuela - UCV con un registro de calificaciones excelente y como complemento a su formación profesional, estudia inglés en el Centro Venezolano Americano, CVA; curso que está incluido en la beca que la fundación le otorgó a Brayan y que es indispensable para garantizar su éxito profesional.
Sus padres, que lo han acompañado desde el principio y su tutor, Eduardo Carrasquero, profesional con más de 25 años de experiencia en gerencia y finanzas, lo acompañarán desde ahora hasta que culmine sus estudios (estipulado para julio de 2020), y serán pilares fundamentales en el proceso formativo de Brayan, que desde ahora podrá enfocarse únicamente en sus estudios.
Moisés Alejandro
Estudiante de Terapia de Lenguaje

“…Mi nombre es Moisés Alejandro, nací en caracas el 16 de julio de 1999, tengo 19 años de edad, mi madre se llama Elizabeth Cristina y mi padre Dennys, tengo un hermano llamado Clement Fabian de 13 años de edad. Ya que mis padres se divorciaron vivo con mi mamá y mi hermano en los Teques, Edo Miranda. Actualmente por motivo de estudios resido en Caracas, Valle Arriba de lunes a viernes. Decido estudiar Terapia del Lenguaje gracias a una de mis tías que es Terapeuta Ocupacional, la cual trabaja con niños con T.E.A, fue enseñándome su trabajo y fui conociendo a sus colegas entre ellos Terapistas del Lenguaje, desde entonces me fue gustando esta carrera que desde que la empecé a estudiar me apasiona. Trabajo en CEPIA, un colegio de niños con T.E.A (Trastornos del Espectro Autista) desempeñando el trabajo de Terapeuta del Lenguaje, para así cubrir mis necesidades básicas. Mi madre no recibe la planteada mesada de mi padre, de esta manera no le genero cargas a mi mama ya que de ella depende mi hermano…”
Actualmente Moisés cursa cuarto semestre de Terapia de Lenguaje en el Instituto Venezolano de la Audición y el Lenguaje - IVAL en Caracas y en octubre comienza el quinto semestre que, según nos dijo, le hubiera sido muy difícil inscribir si no fuera por la ayuda que recibe de la fundación.
Acorde a la filosofía de la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro, a Moisés se le asignó como tutora a la Lic. Amelia Carrasquero de Vera, profesional relacionada con su área de estudios que dirige un centro que reúne a un grupo interdisciplinario de profesionales dedicados a la atención de niños, adolescentes y grupos familiares llamado ALDECA - Alternativas para el desarrollo www.grupoaldeca.com; gracias a ella Moisés tuvo la oportunidad de realizar una pasantía de 6 meses en el departamento de Terapia de Lenguaje la cual no sólo es un requisito indispensables para graduarse sino que contribuye de manera significativa a su formación profesional.
