José David is a 24-year-old Venezuelan young man who joined Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro in October 2016 to continue his studies in Civil Engineering at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello - UCAB. After 6 years of hard work, in August 2022, he completed his academic class load and is currently working on his final undergraduate project (thesis), which he will be defending in the first quarter of next year.

The following is José David's testimony about his family, his relationship with the Fundación and how he envisions his future.

WHO I AM

My name is José David, I am 24 years old, and I live in Caracas with my mother, my sister, and my aunt. I am currently working on my undergraduate thesis to obtain my degree in Civil Engineering at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello-UCAB. I will tell you a little bit about my history and how I got where I am now...

It all started in 2015 when I finished my high school education, my dream was to study at the Universidad Central de Venezuela - UCV, however, I did not qualify for a spot. Disappointed for not achieving my goal, my family supported me and encouraged me to move forward. My aunt supported me financially, she told me, "Enroll in the UCAB, do all the paperwork to enter, we will support you".

I took the test, and I was accepted, it was an exciting emotion, it was the first step to start my academic journey in such a prestigious and recognized university. It was a drastic change for me, but with a lot of effort and sacrifice I managed to approve all the classes during the first semester. For the second semester, the country's economy worsened, and the university increased the cost of tuition considerably, making it very difficult for my family to afford my education.

It was then when my aunt Margarita contacted Marisa, a member of the Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro (FOF), they interviewed me and I was very fortunate to receive a scholarship, which allowed me to continue my studies, that day I felt that I could achieve everything, it was a wonderful feeling.

MY RELATIONSHIP WITH THE FOF

My relationship with the FOF has been very rewarding, from the beginning I have received both financial and motivational support, for which I am very grateful. Periodically I met with my mentor, Engineer Ricardo Larrain, who, with his experience and advice, guided me all along. Every time I had an interview with him, it was like a recharge of energy, an additional impulse to move forward and overcome the obstacles that life as a student presented to me.

Without a doubt, my mentor taught me that the important thing is to get up again and move forward despite the difficulties. At the beginning of each semester I had a meeting with him to analyze which classes I could enroll. Occasionally there were gatherings of students and mentors of the FOF, that day was very exciting, reaffirming the commitment to myself to get ahead and with all the people who, in one way or another, made it possible for that group of students to be there, I felt goose bumps just sitting there, I lived that day with several students from different majors and universities, who, like me, wanted to get ahead, it was a very exciting atmosphere.

WHERE I AM NOW

I am currently working on my final undergraduate project (thesis), in the area of seismo-geotechnics (the behavior of structures during earthquakes) and since the beginning of December I have started working for an architectural firm called Grupo Boaz, as a resident engineer, where I am supervising a remodeling project at the PDVSA offices in La Campiña, an opportunity that I plan to take advantage of to expand my knowledge and continue learning.

WHERE I AM GOING

My main objective is to help people to improve their quality of life, to be able to contribute to society, to achieve my goals and help my family to move forward. Someday, I would like to work in a prestigious construction company, participate in projects, working as part of a team. I hope to build my own house. The civil engineering field is very broad, it has several branches, I would like to specialize in soil and structures. I know that everything is hard, however, step by step I know that with effort and dedication I will achieve all my goals. And I definitively will work hard to increase my professional knowledge and skills.

José David es un muchacho venezolano de 24 años que llega a la fundación en octubre de 2016 para continuar sus estudios de Ingeniería Civil en la Universidad Católica Andrés Bello - UCAB. Después de 6 años de arduo trabajo, en agosto de 2022 termina su carga académica y estos momentos se encuentra realizando su trabajo final de grado (tesis) que debe defender el primer trimestre del próximo año.

A continuación el testimonio de José David acerca de su familia, su relación con la fundación y su futuro.

QUIEN SOY

Mi nombre es José David Rosales Delgado, tengo 24 años, vivo en Caracas con mi mama, mi hermana y mi tía. Actualmente estoy realizando el trabajo de grado para optar al título de Ingeniero Civil en la Universidad Católica Andrés Bello-UCAB. Les contaré un poco mi historia y como llegue a donde estoy…

Todo inicio en el año 2015 cuando termine mis estudios de bachillerato, mi sueño era estudiar en la UCV, sin embargo, presenté y no logre optar por un cupo. Decepcionado por no alcanzar el objetivo planteado, mi familia me apoyó y me animó a seguir adelante. Mi tía me apoyó económicamente con ayuda de su trabajo, me dijo, “Inscríbete en la UCAB, haz todos los papeles para ingresar, nosotros te apoyaremos”. Presenté la prueba de conocimientos para Ingeniería Civil y fui aceptado, fue una emoción muy grande, era el primer paso para comenzar mi carrera en tan prestigiosa y reconocida casa de estudios. Fue un cambio drástico, pero con mucho esfuerzo y sacrificio logre aprobar todas las materias el primer semestre. Para el segundo semestre, la economía del país empeoró y la universidad aumento considerablemente el precio de la matricula, resultando muy complicado para mi familia costearme los estudios. Fue entonces cuando mi tía Margarita, se contactó con la Sra. Marisa, miembro de la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro (FOF), me entrevistaron y tuve la fortuna de ser becado, motivo por el cual pude continuar mis estudios, ese día sentí que todo lo podía lograr, fue una emoción muy grande.

MI RELACION CON LA FUNDACION

La relación con la fundación ha sido muy enriquecedora, desde el inicio he recibido apoyo tanto económico como motivacional, razón por la cual les estoy muy agradecido. Periódicamente me reunía con mi tutor, el Ingeniero Ricardo Larraín, quien, con su experiencia y consejos, me guio todo este tiempo. Cada vez que tenía una entrevista con él, era como una recarga de energía, un impulso adicional a seguir adelante y superar los obstáculos que me presentaba la vida de estudiante. Sin duda alguna mi tutor me enseñó que lo importante es levantarse de nuevo y seguir adelante a pesar de las dificultades. Al inicio de cada semestre me reunía con él para analizar que materias podía inscribir en dicho semestre. En algunas ocasiones nos reuníamos los estudiantes y tutores de la fundación, ese día era muy emocionante, reafirmando el compromiso conmigo mismo de salir adelante y con todas las personas que, de alguna u otra manera, hacían posible que ese grupo de estudiantes pudieran estar allí, sentía como ese día me erizaba la piel el solo hecho de estar sentado allí, conviví ese día con varios estudiantes de distintas carreras, que tanto como yo, querían salir adelante, era un ambiente muy emocionante.

DONDE ESTOY

Actualmente estoy realizando mi trabajo de grado relacionado con la sismo-geotecnia (el comportamiento de las estructuras en el momento de un sismo) y desde principios de diciembre estoy trabajando en una empresa de arquitectura llamada Grupo Boaz, donde desempeño el cargo de ingeniero residente de obra y en estos momentos estoy supervisando un trabajo de remodelación en las oficinas de PDVSA en La Campiña, oportunidad que pienso aprovechar para ampliar mis conocimientos y seguir aprendiendo.

HACIA DONDE VOY

Principalmente mi objetivo es ayudar a las personas a tener una mejor calidad de vida, poder aportar a la sociedad, cumplir mis metas, ayudar a mi familia a seguir adelante. Quiero algún día trabajar en una constructora grande, importante, participar en proyectos, trabajando en equipo. Espero construir mi propia casa. La carrera de ingeniería civil es muy amplia, tiene varias ramas, me gustaría desarrollarme en el área de suelo y estructuras. Se que todo cuesta, más, sin embargo, paso a paso sé que con esfuerzo y dedicación lograre todas mis metas y objetivos planteados.

The Class of 2022: A Major Achievement for FOF

Finally, after two years, the students of the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello - UCAB Class of 2022, were able to celebrate the completion of their college studies with the usual events. In July of this year 2022, three of the seven students who have Fundacion Oportunidad y Futuro (FOF) scholarships at UCAB finished their academic education and are only waiting for their commencement ceremony to be held in the first quarter of the year 2023.

As part of the celebration, our students had a picnic with Ms. María Dolores Padrón, who is the person in charge of our students within UCAB; they also attended the traditional toast that is given by the President of UCAB to all students who have completed their studies; and finally they attended an outdoor concert where all undergraduates meet and which is held on the last day of classes, just before leaving for summer vacation.

Our UCAB undergraduate students are:

José, who is 22 years old, was admitted as a FOF scholar in October 2016, and is graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering.
Victoria, who is 21 years old, was admitted as a FOF scholar in November 2018 and is graduating with a degree in Computer Engineering.
Carlos, who is 22 years old, was admitted as a FOF scholar in November 2018 and is graduating with a degree in Telecommunications Engineering.

In addition to the students who graduated from UCAB in July of this year, seven of the twenty-four students that FOF has awarded scholarships at the Instituto Universitario Jesús Obrero - IUJO also completed their academic studies and will be receiving their diplomas sometime in the year 2023.

And finally, on July 31, 2022, the last high school student who received a scholarship from the foundation graduated, and we hope that next year she will begin her college education.

In conclusion, this year Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro has graduated 11 students, whose mentors have not only accompanied and advised them throughout their years as students but will assist them in their search for a job that will help them enter the Venezuelan workforce.

Additionally, and just as FOF is saying goodbye to its eleven graduating students, it is also welcoming eight new scholarship recipients who have joined us in July of this year, all of them from the Instituto Universitario Jesús Obrero - IUJO. We wish them all the success in their journey.

Finalmente, luego de dos años, los estudiantes de la Promoción 2022 de la Universidad Católica Andrés Bello -UCAB pudieron celebrar de manera regular la finalización de sus estudios universitarios. En julio de este año 2022, tres de los siete estudiantes que la Fundacion Oportunidad y Futuro (FOF) tiene becados en la UCAB finalizaron sus estudios y solo están a la espera de su acto de graduación que se celebrará en el primer trimestre del año 2024.

Como parte de la celebración, nuestros estudiantes tuvieron un encuentro con la Lic. María Dolores Padrón, quien es la persona encargada de nuestros estudiantes dentro de la UCAB; además asistieron a un brindis que por tradición, el rector de la UCAB brinda a todos los estudiantes que culminaron sus estudios y por último asistieron a un concierto al aire libre donde se reúnen todos los estudiantes que se gradúan y que se realiza el último día de clases, justo antes de salir de vacaciones.

Nuestros estudiantes graduados de la UCAB son:

José, que tiene 22 años, ingresa como becario de la FOF en octubre de 2016, y se gradúa de Ingeniero Civil.
Victoria, que tiene 21 años, ingresa como becario de la FOF en noviembre de 2018 y se gradúa de Ingeniero en Informática.
Carlos, que tiene 22 años, ingresa como becario de la FOF en noviembre de 2018y se gradúa de Ingeniero en Telecomunicaciones.

Además de los estudiantes graduados de la UCAB en julio de este año también culminaron sus estudios siete de los veinticuatro estudiantes que la FOF tiene becados en el Instituto Universitario Jesús Obrero - IUJO, que de igual manera tendrán su acto de graduación en algún momento del año 2023.

Y por último el 31 de julio de 2022 se graduó la única estudiante de bachillerato becada por la fundación, y que esperamos que el próximo año comience sus estudios universitarios.

En conclusión, este año la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro ha graduado 11 estudiantes, cuyos tutores no solo los han acompañado y aconsejado a lo largo de sus años como estudiantes sino que ahora los ayudan en la búsqueda de un empleo que los ayude a insertarse en el mercado laboral venezolano.

De la misma manera que la FOF despide a sus estudiantes becados graduados en el 2022, le da la bienvenida a ocho nuevos becarios que comenzaron sus estudios en julio de este año, todos ellos del Instituto Universitario Jesús Obrero - IUJO y a los cuales les deseamos todo el éxito.

Internships... work as a complement to education.

Diorfelis, is 26 years old and has been a scholarship recipient of the foundation since she began her college studies in October 2015. In July 2021 she completed her academic classes as a Computer Engineer at the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello - UCAB in Caracas; in October 2021 she was hired by the company Soluciones Láser where Diorfelis completed her work internship and in January 2022 was hired by the company permanently.

This is how Diorfelis describes her journey during these years: "...When I had to choose a college career, my father, who has been an unconditional guide and support, brought me to Caracas to visit different university campuses, of all of them I fell in love with the UCAB (Universidad Católica Andrés Bello), and I decided that I wanted to study Computer Engineering there, arguing: "this is what I should choose, this is the career of the future". Entering UCAB was a challenge because my father is a teacher and could not afford a private university, in an interview looking for a work study scholarship, they told me about Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro. I filled out the paperwork, soon after I was admitted and from that moment on this foundation covered all my tuition expenses.

I have already completed all the classes, still have to finish my internship and my thesis, the learning path continues, but I thank Mr. Lorenzo D'Amore who has been my mentor during all this journey. Despite the time and the setbacks, he has always supported me, care about me, has good energy and gave me my first job opportunity as a future computer engineer; he referred me to the company where I am going to do my internship and my thesis. My gratitude to the Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro and to Lorenzo D'Amore is infinite and will always be..."

In 2021, thanks to the efforts of her mentor Enzo D'Amore, Diorfelis started her 12- week work internship at Soluciones Laser, a Venezuelan based company with 30 years of experience specialized in executing successful projects in document management (www.solucioneslaser.com/). In January 2022, upon completion of her internship, and in view of her good performance, she was hired on a permanent basis. The following is an excerpt from the report sent by Soluciones Laser to Fundación Oportunidady Futuro on Diorfelis' performance during the time she has been working with them.

About the internship

She was part of the team responsible for the development of a portal for the management of

tax documents to comply with SENIAT Ruling 032 of Digital Invoice. The objective was

achieved to the point that the company currently has SENIAT (the Venezuelan Internal

Revenue Service) approval from 6 corporate clients for the use of the platform.

About her work

According to her performance and the importance of the project she developed in the

internship, Soluciones Laser offered her a position in the Agile Development cell as Digital

Developer where she is currently generating new versions of the platform with more

functionality and generating environments for new clients.

Diorfelis is currently working on her Degree Instrumental Work (undergraduate thesis), the last

requirement necessary to complete her studies and receive the degree of Computer Engineer.

Diorfelis, tiene 26 años y ha sido becaria de la fundación desde que comenzó sus estudios universitarios en octubre de 2015. En julio de 2021 completó su formación académica como Ingeniero en Informática en la Universidad Católica Andrés Bello - UCAB en Caracas y en octubre 2021 fue contratada por la empresa Soluciones Láser, donde Diorfelis comenzó su pasantía laboral y en enero 2022 fue contratada por la empresa de manera definitiva.

Así describe Diorfelis su trayectoria en estos años: “…Cuando me tocó elegir una carrera universitaria mi padre, quien ha sido un guía y apoyo incondicional, me trajo a Caracas para conocer las universidades, de todas las que visitamos me enamoré de la UCAB, y decidí que allí quería estudiar Ingeniería en Informática, argumentado: “esto es lo que debo elegir, es una carrera del futuro”. Entrar en la UCAB era un reto porque mi papá es docente y no podía pagar una universidad privada, en una entrevista buscando beca trabajo en la universidad, me hablaron de la fundación Oportunidad y Futuro. Introduje los papeles, al poco tiempo fui admitida y a partir de ese momento esta fundación cubrió la totalidad de mis estudios.

Aun me falta, debo realizar mi pasantía y terminar la tesis, el camino del aprendizaje continua, pero agradezco al Señor Lorenzo D´Amore quien ha sido mi tutor durante todo este camino. A pesar del tiempo y los tropiezos, él siempre me apoyó, tuvo solidaridad, buena energía y me puso en contacto con la empresa donde realizaré mis pasantías y hoy me brinda mi primera oportunidad laboral como futuro ingeniero en informática. Mi agradecimiento a la fundación Oportunidad y Futuro y a Lorenzo D´Amore es infinito y así será siempre…”

En octubre 2021, gracias a las gestiones de su tutor Enzo D´Amore, Diorfelis comenzó su pasantía laboral en Soluciones Laser, empresa venezolana con 30 años de experiencia ejecutando proyectos exitosos en el manejo de documentos www.solucioneslaser.com/. En enero 2022, una vez finalizada la pasantía laboral (de 12 semanas de duración), y en vista de su buen rendimiento durante la misma, fue contratada formalmente por la empresa.

A continuación un extracto del reporte que envió la empresa Soluciones Laser a la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro sobre el desempeño de Diorfelis durante el tiempo que lleva trabajando con ellos.

Sobre la pasantía laboral: Formó parte del equipo responsable del desarrollo de un portal para el manejo de documentos fiscales para dar cumplimiento a la Providencia 032 de SENIAT de Factura Digital. Se logró el objetivo al punto de que en estos momentos la empresa cuenta con la aprobación SENIAT de 6 clientes corporativos para el uso de la plataforma.

Sobre su trabajo: De acuerdo con su desempeño y a la importancia del proyecto que desarrolló en la pasantía laboral Soluciones Laser le ofreció una posición en la célula de Desarrollo Ágil como Desarrollador Digital en la que actualmente se encuentra generando nuevas versiones de la plataforma con más funcionalidad y generando ambientes para nuevos clientes. En la actualidad Diorfelis se encuentra realizando su Trabajo Instrumental de Grado, último requisito exigido por la universidad para culminar sus estudios.
