2021: Summary of a challenging year

Like 2020, 2021 was for everyone, without exception, a difficult and very complicated year; from the beginning of the pandemic, and until October 2021, classes in all universities and schools in the country were held remotely, which represented for most of our students an additional challenge to the one they already face on a regular basis; especially not having the necessary technological tools to attend and efficiently take advantage of the virtual classes taught by their respective schools (obsolete equipment, little or no internet connection, lack of electricity in their homes). However, overcoming all these obstacles, eight of our scholarship recipients completed their studies and successfully graduated, and eight young people, despite the adversities, decided to begin their higher education studies aspiring to a better future for themselves and their families.

Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro begins the year 2022 with 35 active students. All of them receive a monthly scholarship for food and transportation that is periodically adjusted according to inflation indexes. In addition, the 31 scholarship recipients who study at private universities receive a full scholarship that includes 100% of their university tuition.

We expect that the number of students benefiting from our scholarship program will continue to grow; our goal is to close 2022 with 45 scholarship students.

El año 2021, al igual que el año 2020, fue para todos, sin excepción, un año difícil y muy complicado; desde el principio de la pandemia, y hasta octubre de 2021, las clases en todas las universidades e institutos del país se realizaron en forma remota, lo que representó para la mayoría de nuestros estudiantes un reto adicional al que ya enfrentan de forma regular; no contar con las herramientas tecnológicas necesarias para asistir y aprovechar de manera eficiente las clases, que de forma virtual, les impartían sus respectivas casas de estudio (equipos obsoletos, poca o ninguna conexión a internet, falta de electricidad en sus hogares). Sin embargo, venciendo todos los obstáculos, ocho de nuestros becarios concluyeron sus estudios y lograron graduarse de manera exitosa, y ocho jóvenes, a pesar de las adversidades, decidieron comenzar sus estudios de educación superior aspirando a un mejor futuro para ellos y para sus familias.

A finales de 2021 algunas universidades, observando las medidas de bioseguridad correspondientes, decidieron realizar la ceremonia de graduación, donde sólo podían asistir los graduandos y sus padres.

La Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro comienza el año 2022 con 35 estudiantes becados. Todos nuestros estudiantes reciben mensualmente una beca de apoyo para comida y transporte que se ajusta periódicamente de acuerdo con los índices de inflación, adicionalmente, los 31 becarios que estudian en universidades privadas cuentan con beca completa que incluye el 100% del pago de la matrícula universitaria.

Esperamos que el número de estudiantes beneficiados por nuestro programa de becas siga creciendo, nuestro objetivo cerrar el año 2022 con 45 estudiantes becados.

Our Benefactors, The third Pillar for Success

Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro exists and functions thanks to three fundamental columns that support it: our students, who are our reason for being; our mentors, who are responsible for giving our students the necessary support to successfully complete their studies; and our benefactors, who are a group of people and companies that, with their support, allow us to function and move forward. This report will be about them.

Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro functions basically thanks to the support we receive from individuals, private corporations and non-profit organizations that support us in many ways that are indispensable for us to subsist, operate and fulfill our sole mission, which is to support our students to complete their college education.

We can divide our benefactors into three groups:

The first group is constituted by individuals who occasionally or recurrently make a financial contribution, which is what allows us to pay the university tuitions and the scholarships for food and transportation that our students receive every month. Since 2017 we have received contributions from close to 100 benefactors, of which 12 are recurrent.

Even though most of our benefactors reach us through the GlobalGiving platform, there is an important group of friends that support us directly, as is the case of Yolanda Sanchez, yolanda.sanchez45@gmail.com, one of our most longstanding benefactor who, with her last contribution last July, sent us this small message: "I feel that supporting Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro is my small contribution for the future of Venezuela. By helping these young people prepare themselves to become better persons, I am also contributing to build a better country for all of us".

At the same time, some of our benefactors, who support us through the GlobalGiving platform, have left us messages that encourage us to continue the fight for the future of our country.

The second group of benefactors is constituted by the businesses and corporations that collaborate in a particular way with us, as is the case of Cines Unidos, one of the most important cinema chains in our country https://www.cinesunidos.com/, which in 2018 and 2019 ceded the facilities of one of their movie theaters to hold the gatherings that every year Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro holds where all our students, mentors, benefactors and collaborators have the opportunity to meet and get to know each other. They also provided refreshments for all attendees and assisted us with the logistics involved in the preparation of an event of this type.

Unfortunately, since 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, these meetings have been suspended. However, Ms. Andreína Madrid, amadrid@cinesunidos.com responsible for the Social Responsibility Department of Cines Unidos, sent us a statement reaffirming their commitment to support our work “…One of the pillars of Social Responsibility at Cines Unidos is precisely education. This is why it is important for us to support projects such as the one carried out by Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro for more than 25 years. We hope that in the near future we can continue working together to support the foundation in the great work of helping young people in their university studies.…”

The third group that supports us and with whom we work directly are non-profit foundations that, like us, have the mission of promoting education and the integral development of our youth.

In this regard, our main ally is Fundación Sánchez, a non-profit foundation that, since 2015, has supported us through a Scholarship Program called the “Ramiro Nava and Alberto Posee de Rivas Special Scholarship Program”, that was created from funds that were given to Fundación Sanchez for its administration by a widowed lady to benefit Engineering and Diplomacy students in honor of her son, who was an engineer, and her husband, who was a diplomat, both deceased.

Given that Fundación Sánchez does not have the necessary structure to efficiently manage a program of this magnitude, they decided to partner with Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro in this project that, throughout six years has benefited 50 students, 30 of whom have successfully completed their university studies and 20 who are currently pursuing their studies.

To conclude, here is a summary of the group of 7 students who graduated during the year 2021. Unfortunately in Venezuela, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, classes are still held remotely and, any activity that requires the physical presence of our students in their respective institutions are suspended until further notice, therefore we do not have the graphic evidence that our students usually send of all the activities related to graduation.

Fortunately, our students maintain close contact with their mentors and our mentors with the offices responsible for the students at the different universities, which has allowed us to directly monitor their academic development during the year 2021.

La Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro existe y funciona gracias a tres pilares fundamentales que la soportan: nuestros estudiantes, que son nuestra razón de ser; nuestros tutores, que son los responsables de dar a nuestros estudiantes el apoyo necesario para culminar de manera exitosa sus estudios; y nuestros benefactores, que son un grupo de personas y de empresas que, a través de su apoyo, nos permiten funcionar y seguir adelante. Hoy nos centraremos en este tercer pilar.

La Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro funciona básicamente gracias al apoyo que recibe de personas naturales, de empresas privadas y de organizaciones sin fines de lucro que nos apoyan de diferentes maneras y sin las cuales no podríamos subsistir, seguir operando y cumpliendo con nuestra única misión que es la de apoyar a nuestros estudiantes a culminar sus estudios universitarios.

Podemos clasificar a nuestros benefactores en tres grupos:

El primer grupo lo conforman personas naturales que puntual o recurrentemente nos dan su aporte económico y que es lo que nos permite pagar las matrículas universitarias y las becas de manutención mensual de comida y transporte que reciben nuestros estudiantes. Desde 2017 hemos recibido donaciones de cerca de 100 benefactores, de los cuales 12 son recurrentes.

Si bien la mayoría de nuestros benefactores llegan a nosotros a través de la plataforma de GlobalGiving, hay un grupo importante de amigos que nos ayuda en forma directa como es el caso de Yolanda Sánchez, yolanda.sanchez45@gmail.com, uno de nuestros benefactores más antiguos que, con su último aporte que recibimos para cerrar el año escolar 2020-2021, nos envió este pequeño mensaje: “Siento que al colaborar con la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro impulso el porvenir de Venezuela a través de jóvenes que, con mi ayuda, pueden prepararse para construir un mejor país. Apoyarlos a ellos es darle una oportunidad al futuro de todos.”

Igualmente, algunos de nuestros benefactores que nos apoyan a través de la plataforma de GlobalGiving, nos dejan mensajes, que nos nutren y ayudan a seguir luchando por el futuro de nuestro país.

El segundo grupo de benefactores lo conforman las empresas que colaboran de manera puntual con la fundación, como es el caso de Cines Unidos, una de las cadenas de cine más importante de nuestro país https://www.cinesunidos.com/, que en los años 2018 y 2019 cedieron las instalaciones de una de sus salas de cine para realizar los encuentros que todos los años realiza la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro donde todos nuestros estudiantes, tutores y benefactores y amigos tienen la oportunidad de reunirse y conocerse, además nos proporcionaron el refrigerio para todos los asistentes y colaboraron con la organización y la logística que representa la preparación de un evento de este tipo. Lamentablemente desde el año 2020, debido a la pandemia COVID-19, estos encuentros no se han podido seguir realizando. Sin embargo, la Sra. Andreina Madrid, amadrid@cinesunidos.com responsable de la gerencia de Responsabilidad Social de Cines Unidos, nos hizo llegar un comunicado reafirmando su apoyo a nuestra labor educativa, donde nos dice cosas como esta “…Uno de los pilares de Responsabilidad Social de Cines Unidos es precisamente la educación. Es por esto que para nosotros es importante apoyar proyectos como el que desde hace más de 25 años lleva a cabo la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro. Esperamos que en un futuro cercano podamos seguir trabajando juntos para apoyar a la fundación en la gran labor de ayudar a jóvenes en sus estudios universitarios…”

El tercer grupo que nos apoya y con los cuales trabajamos en forma directa, lo conforman fundaciones sin fines de lucro, que como nosotros, tienen la misión de promover la educación y el desarrollo integral de nuestra juventud.

En este aspecto nuestro principal aliado es la Fundación Sánchez, fundación sin fines de lucro que, desde el año 2015 nos ha apoyado a través de un Programa de Becas que fue creado a partir de unos fondos que le fueron entregados para su administración por una señora viuda para beneficiar a estudiantes de Ingeniería y/o Diplomacia en honor a su hijo que fue ingeniero y a su marido que fue diplomático, ambos fallecidos y que lleva por nombre “Programa Especial de Becas Ramiro Nava y Alberto Posee de Rivas”.

En vista que la Fundación Sánchez no cuenta con la estructura necesaria para manejar de manera eficiente un programa de esa envergadura, decidió celebrar un acuerdo con FOF que a lo largo de estos 6 años ha beneficiado a 50 estudiantes de los cuales 30 han culminado de manera exitosa sus estudios universitarios y 20 están actualmente cursando sus estudios.

Para finalizar presentamos un resumen del grupo de 7 estudiantes que culminaron de manera exitosa sus estudios universitarios durante el año 2021. Lamentablemente en Venezuela, debido a la pandemia COVID-19, las clases aun son de forma remota y queda suspendida hasta nuevo aviso, cualquier actividad que requiera la presencia física de nuestros estudiantes en sus respectivas casas de estudio, por lo tanto no contamos con la evidencia gráfica que generalmente nos envían los estudiantes de sus actividades de culminación, tan pronto las tengamos se las haremos llegar.

Afortunadamente nuestros becarios mantienen contacto directo con sus tutores y nuestros tutores con las oficinas responsables de los estudiantes en las diferentes universidades, lo que nos ha permitido hacer un seguimiento directo del desarrollo académico de nuestros becarios durante el año 2021.

Student and Mentor Relationship-The Key to Success

Daniel is a student who started as a scholarship holder of the Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro since his enrollment at Universidad Metropolitana - UNIMET in October 2015, until he finished his studies in Systems Engineering in March 2021.

Daniel, who is a video game fanatic, was born in Caracas in March 1998, but lived all his life with his mother and older sister in Guatire, a city located on the periphery of Caracas. From a very young age he knew he wanted to study engineering, and thanks to his excellent grades he joined the group of students selected by the Universidad Metropolitana de Caracas to be part of the Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro scholarship program.

In December 2018, at the end of the year reunion that Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro hold every year with its students, mentors and benefactors, we had the opportunity to meet his family and his girlfriend. Although that year was very difficult for Daniel and he was on the verge of losing his scholarship, thanks to the early intervention of Jorge, his mentor, who has supported and guided him throughout these 5 years and who has been a key figure in Daniel's success in his studies, the Foundation decided to continue supporting him. Daniel made it through and today we can proudly say that he is part of the group of 13 students who, between January 2020 and April 2021 and despite the difficulties that the pandemic has represented, graduated after submitting and approving his degree project which was defended remotely due to sanitary restrictions.

Daniel is a young man committed to his country, and while he was studying at the university, he participated in the community project that UNIMET is currently carrying out with the organization Superatec (https://superatec.org.ve/), whose main objective is to contribute to the education of low-income youth in the basic aspects of personal and technological training in order to break the technological barriers that prevent their personal and professional development. Since September 2020, Daniel is working at Abside (https://www.absidecorp.com/), a consulting, training, implementation and support service company on the SAP platform, where he holds the position of Innovation Architect.

Daniel wrote "... I am very happy to be able to finish this process, which was full of joys and obstacles, but in the end I was able to achieve my goal, I am satisfied to leave a contribution to the Socioeconomic Student Support Office of UNIMET, which is responsible for providing support to all the students with scholarships and with which I had an excellent relationship during the time I was at the university. I'm leaving with a lot of learning. I'm looking forward to focusing on the present and what the future holds ..."

He also told us about his plans for the future "...My plans at a professional level are to continue learning as much as I can in the company where I am currently working (Abside), I am happy, and eager to continue growing both as a person and professionally, it is a different world from the academic one and I want to see how much I can progress in this year 2021 that offers us so many challenges, but also opportunities. As for my personal plans, since I think this pandemic has taught us that things can change very quickly, I want to enjoy time with the people I love; in general I want to be happy..."

Finally, an excerpt from the letter written by Daniel's mother to Jorge, Daniel´s mentor: "...Our family, Mesa-Esquivel, is infinitely grateful to you and the Foundation for the support given to my son during his career as a Systems Engineering student at the Universidad Metropolitana. And when I refer to "support", it is not only the economic support given during these years of relationship and it is worth noting that it was of great help to us, but the academic, moral and emotional support we received from you, Jorge Zurita became part of this whole process, you broke with the stereotypes of the typical Mentor and became an ally, a support and I even dare to say a good friend, to whom we will always have a place in our family, in our hearts and in our prayers...".

Testimonies like this one are what motivate and encourage the Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro to keep going despite the difficulties.

Daniel es un estudiante que comenzó como becario de la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro desde su ingreso en la Universidad Metropolitana - UNIMET en octubre de 2015, hasta que finalizó sus estudios de Ingeniería de Sistemas en marzo de 2021.

Daniel, que es un fanático de los video juegos, nació Caracas en marzo de 1998, pero vivió toda su vida con su mamá y su hermana mayor en Guatire, ciudad ubicada a las afueras de Caracas. Desde muy joven supo que quería estudiar ingeniería, y gracias a sus buenas calificaciones entró en el grupo de estudiantes seleccionados por la Universidad Metropolitana para formar parte del grupo de becarios de la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro.

En diciembre de 2018, en la reunión de fin de año que la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro hace con sus becarios, tutores y benefactores, tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer a su familia y a su novia. A pesar que ese año fue muy difícil para Daniel y estuvo a punto de perder la beca, gracias a la intervención oportuna de Jorge, su tutor, que lo ha apoyado y orientado a lo largo de estos 5 años y que ha sido figura determinante para el éxito de Daniel en sus estudios, se decidió continuar apoyándolo. Daniel salió adelante y hoy podemos decir con orgullo que forma parte del grupo de 13 estudiantes que, entre enero 2020 y abril 2021 y a pesar de las dificultades que la pandemia ha representado, logró finalizar sus estudios y graduarse luego de presentar y aprobar su trabajo de grado cuya defensa fue realizada de forma remota debido a las restricciones sanitarias.

Daniel es un muchacho comprometido con el país, y mientras realizaba sus estudios universitarios participó en el proyecto comunitario que la UNIMET mantiene con la organización Superatec (https://superatec.org.ve/), cuyo objetivo principal es contribuir en la enseñanza de jóvenes de bajos recursos en los aspectos básicos en formación personal y tecnológica; con la finalidad de romper las barreras tecnológicas que impiden su desarrollo personal y profesional, orientado hacia la inserción laboral. Actualmente, desde el mes de septiembre de 2020 Daniel se encuentra trabajando en Abside (https://www.absidecorp.com/), empresa de servicio de consultoría, capacitación, implementación y soporte sobre la plataforma SAP, donde ocupa el cargo de Arquitecto de Innovación.

Daniel nos escribe “...Estoy muy feliz de poder terminar esta etapa, la cual estuvo llena de alegrías y obstáculos, pero al final pude cumplir con mi objetivo, me siento satisfecho de dejar un aporte a la “Dirección de Apoyo Socioeconómico Estudiantil” de la UNIMET la cual es la encargada de brindar apoyo a los estudiantes becados y con la cual tuve una excelente relación en estos años que estuve en la universidad. Me llevo una gran cantidad de aprendizajes. Tengo muchas ganas de concentrarme en el presente y en lo que me depara el futuro...”.

Y nos cuenta sus planes “...Mis planes a nivel profesional es seguir aprendiendo todo lo que pueda en la empresa en la que estoy actualmente, estoy feliz, y con muchas ganas de seguir creciendo tanto como persona y profesionalmente, es un mundo distinto al académico y quiero ver que tanto puedo progresar en este año 2021 que tantos retos nos ofrece, pero también oportunidades. En cuanto a mis planes personales, quiero disfrutar del tiempo con las personas que quiero, ya que creo que esta pandemia nos ha enseñado que las cosas pueden cambiar muy rápido. En general quiero ser feliz...”.

Para finalizar, un extracto de la carta que escribió la mamá de Daniel a Jorge su tutor. Testimonios como este son los que nos alientan a seguir adelante a pesar de las dificultades: ”…Nuestra familia, Mesa-Esquivel, le está infinitamente agradecida a Ud. y a la Fundación por el apoyo brindado a mi hijo durante su trayectoria como estudiante de Ingeniería de Sistemas en la Universidad Metropolitana. Y cuando me refiero a “apoyo”, no es solo al soporte económico otorgado durante estos años de relación y que bien vale la pena resaltar que nos fue de gran ayuda, sino al apoyo académico, moral y emocional que recibimos de Ud. Para nosotros, Jorge Zurita se convirtió en parte de todo este proceso, Ud. rompió con los estereotipos del típico Tutor y pasó a ser un aliado, un soporte y hasta me atrevo a decir que un buen amigo, a quien siempre le tendremos reservado un lugar en nuestra familia, en nuestros corazones y nuestras oraciones…”

Testimonios como éste son los que impulsan y estimulan a la Fundación Oportunidad y Futuro a seguir adelante a pesar de las dificultades..
