At Education Africa, we pride ourselves in offering opportunities and staying true to our motto, which is to Educate • Equip • Empower and this is no different when it comes to our Marimba Project. The Education Africa Upskilling Workshops are accessible to all our educators in our Marimba Hubs. We also offer 40-hour workshops to train new Marimba Educators interested in our Marimba Hub programme.
In January, we held our first upskilling workshop of the year, for all of our Gauteng-based Marimba Hub teachers. It was a great opportunity for our Gauteng Hub teachers to meet each other, share experiences and learn some new music from our Education Africa Marimba Specialist and Senior Manager, Joan Lithgow. Additionally, we learnt how to expand their creative arts lessons through making home-made vuvuzelas. We also reinstated our annual prizegiving (which was put on hold during COVID) – prizes where given in various categories to our teachers, as well as a small token of our appreciation for their dedication and hard work throughout 2023.
More recently, we completed the Education Africa 40-hour Marimba Workshop offered to new and existing marimba educators The 5 day-long workshop was an incredible success! 90% of the participants attending had never played an instrument in their lives before and with support from the incredible Marimba team hundreds of SA children from disadvantaged backgrounds in our beautiful country are going to get the privilege of learning to play the marimba through this initiative.
