Literacy For Orphans To Transform Lives

By Mohammed Auwal Yakubu | Assistant Director of Business Program - Nigeria

Dear LI Donors Dedicated To Creating A Brighter World,
I am excited to inform you of two US high school teams working to provide new English training for Orphans our business owners are caring for.
The first group we would like to highlight are Bella and Anna are who have been primarily working with our Nigerian partner, Umar, on creating a children's book for the orphans.
From the students themselves
The book aims to teach the children the alphabet, basic numbers, basic colors and basic shapes. It is equipped with the English and Hausa translation of each color, shape, etc. along with the pronunciation of each English word that the children are trying to learn. The book uses pictures to help the children understand what each page is trying to convey.
Finding pictures was originally challenging seeing as we were using images of commonly found things in America, not really focussing on what was common in Nigeria. For example, we put a picture of an octopus for the "O" page, but Umar advised us to put a picture of an onion instead to make the picture more relatable to the orphans.
With the help of Marshall and Umar we were able to successfully create a very simple, child-friendly resource for the orphanage to use to teach the orphans. The book is being printed and laminated by Umar right now!
The next group lead by Nam are creating an online learning program to use sounds, animation and more to teach English to Orphans who are in the Bauchi area that can come to the LI office three days a week for literacy training.
These lessons are designed by both the students and Umar and are continually updated by the orphans, the students and Umar himself and is now being used by both the orphans and their caretakers to teach both parties English at the same time.
Attached in the report is a link to the online site we are using to teach the Orphans and we encourage you to view it!
Once again thank you for your support it is more than we could have ever hoped for.
Wishing you a wonderful spring from the entire LI family
