Literacy from the Bottom Up

By Miliana Bocher | LI Intern

Dear Amazing Leadership Initiatives and Respective Donors,

The high school summer programs are quickly approaching, and we here at Leadership Initiatives are looking forward to working with and shaping the future leaders of the world. Their solutions in our law, business, and medical programs have monumental impacts on an international scale. These shakers of tomorrow transform lives and allow for Nigerian business owners to make lasting change in their communities that can elevate the entire population.

In regards to our summer programs, a group of our students during a previous year’s program was able to take the issue of literacy from another direction, coming up with solutions that have proven to be tremendously successful during this past year. A team led by Morgan, one of our top interns at Leadership Initiatives, was partnered with an orphan care company. This Nigerian entrepreneur was looking for ways to teach the orphans English and other basic life skills, but was having difficulty even knowing where to begin. Morgan’s team gladly accepted the challenge, brainstorming ways to create a curriculum that could teach a variety of skills in an organized and clear-cut way. The final result? Morgan’s team created a picture book that taught the basic skills of hygiene through a combination of symbols and English words. Through this picture book, students would be able to learn the basic skills of life while simultaneously learning English and having fun coloring. This team’s ingenuity and unique perspective regarding the challenges of literacy training from the youngest ages was transformative for this entrepreneur. Almost a year later, these orphans are much more fluent in English and have all mastered the skills needed to pursue higher education and opportunities.

This solution, however amazing, would never have been funded without your contribution. Without your support, these picture books would never have been created, the orphans would have continued to struggle with English, and classroom time may have been used ineffectively. However, your donation made all this and more possible — by giving these orphans the tools they need to succeed, you played a direct role in their future education and the lives that they themselves will now be able to change as well.

Thank you so much for your generosity in helping us continue to empower students, entrepreneurs, and children around the globe. Through your aid, no matter how small, we can work together to make a difference. I thank you again for joining us on this journey!

Best,

The Leadership Initiatives Team
