On November 9, 2018, Global Peace Foundation program directors, Ann Marlita Arevalo (education) and I (community development) held a courtesy visit to the Mayor of Palompon, Leyte, Hon. Ramon Oñate and Vice Mayor Georgina Arevalo at the Municipal Mayor’s office to update them on the development of the project fundraising through Global Giving.
Together with the Alternative Learning System (ALS) mobile teacher Violita Oafer, we also went to Barangay Buenavista to conduct interviews for all members of the newly organized Buenavista All-Lights Village Fisherfolks Association to check and assess their commitments to the association.
Following the interviews, the team conducted a special workshop on the roles and responsibilities of officers and members of the Association. The workshop was held at Senior Citizen Hall, Barangay Buenavista, Palompon, Leyte.
The workshop included a team exercise on the current challenges the officers and members face as fisherfolks, extending to their families and community. An interactive discussion on how to resolve the challenges followed. Another team exercise focused on identifying the qualities of a good member and a good leader of a community.
A presentation on GPF's core values as the framework for building a great association, covering the good qualities of a leader and a member of a community, are discussed by GPF Education program director Ann Montejo while I conducted a values formation seminar anchored to GPF's vision of "One Family under God" as the underlying aspiration to peace building. The workshop is part of the GPF leadership development series to empower the community in becoming self-sustainable.
