Empower a Girl in Guatemala: Education after COVID

The children of Guatemala started the 2025 school year in the third week of February. With great excitement, they return to the classrooms eager to continue strengthening their learning. This year, it is expected that the scholarship recipients will continue their education and stay on track with their studies.

However, one of the challenges families face at the beginning of the school year is purchasing school supplies, paying for uniforms, and acquiring essentials such as backpacks and shoes.

Teachers from the schools benefiting from the project have expressed their gratitude for the support provided to the scholarship recipients. They have observed positive changes in behavior, improved academic performance, timely completion of school assignments, and a genuine commitment to education.

This year, the global goal of the Scholarship Project is to provide scholarships to 4,100 girls and young women. Among them, 50 young women will be completing their basic education, directly supported by GlobalGiving. This would be a significant achievement for the project and, especially, for the families benefiting from it, as most of these scholarship recipients are the first in their households to complete their education cycle. Since the launch of the campaign for this cause, many young women have successfully completed their basic studies.

In the years 2023 and 2024, an average of 750 school supply kits were assembled to support the beginning of the school year for scholarship recipients from low-income backgrounds. Such was the case of Jasmín, who lives in a village in the municipality of Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, and whose great aspiration was to become a professional. However, despite her enthusiasm for attending school, she knew her family could not afford all the school supplies she needed.

In an adverse context, Jasmín never stopped trying. She always made an effort with the few school materials she had. Her teachers, noticing her dedication and commitment, sought ways to help her. They requested support from the Scholarship Project. Thanks to the annual “Open Backpack” campaign at the Foundation, several vulnerable girls at risk of dropping out of school were supported with a school supply kit, including Jasmín.

With her new school supplies, she felt more motivated to continue her studies, a support that has been a great success for her. Her efforts have yielded positive results: she is currently one of the top students, a role model for her classmates, and an inspiring girl because of her achievements, dedication, and responsibility.
