The Smart Agri Centre (SAC) in Mbata, Western Province, Uganda, continues to make significant strides in improving the lives of local farmers.
In recent developments, the SAC has consistently provided 60 kWh of power daily, fueling the success of various businesses, including a restaurant, a salon, and milling and welding enterprises. The extension of power to Mbata's main trading center has not only enabled businesses to operate into the night but has also enhanced overall community safety, alleviating the darkness at night. Furthermore, the SAC has extended power to the local school and health center, contributing to improved facilities and services.
A notable addition to the SAC's initiatives is the construction of a coffee washing station and drying rack. This infrastructure empowers local farmers to process their coffee into artisan 'dry parchment' coffee beans, commanding higher prices compared to their unprocessed 'red cherry' counterparts.
Excitingly, the SAC has completed its first round of 'bulking.' This agricultural practice involves grouping together a larger quantity of onions to sell as a unit, enhancing marketability and potentially securing higher prices per unit. The SAC was used to store the 'bulked' onions from the recent harvest, enabling farmers to collectively sell their produce at an elevated price, at the Congo border. Stay tuned for further developments!
