Education Enables Her to Provide for Her Family

By Diana Richardson | Executive Director

Zenah
Zenah

As the eldest of nine grandchildren, all living in a small mud hut with their elderly, sickly grandmother, Zenah has faced immense challenges from a young age. With their parents either deceased or having abandoned the family to seek opportunities in Nairobi, Zenah always knew she would one day bear the responsibility of raising her younger siblings and cousins. Her only hope for changing their dire circumstances was to secure a living-wage job, which required an education.

Zenah dedicated herself to her studies, achieving outstanding grades that earned her a place at university. Through the generosity of donors like you, the Makindu Children's Program funded Zenah's college education, from which she graduated last year. This achievement has been a beacon of hope for her family, especially in the wake of recent tragedies.

Tragically, one of Zenah's cousins in their household recently succumbed to AIDS after struggling to adhere to the prescribed anti-retrovirals. This loss has devastated the entire family, especially their grandmother, whose health has further deteriorated, leaving her unable to care for the grandchildren.

Now, Zenah stands as the sole provider for her family. With her education, degree, and a blossoming career, she is empowered to take on this enormous responsibility. She is committed to caring for her grandmother and her younger siblings and cousins, ensuring they have the support and opportunities needed to thrive.

Zenah’s journey from a small mud hut to a college graduate with a promising career exemplifies the transformative power of education. We believe that with her guidance and care, her family will rise from their heartbreak and go on to achieve college educations, secure living-wage jobs, and lead productive, fulfilling lives.

Education has not only empowered Zenah but has also saved her family from the cycle of poverty. There are countless other families like Zenah’s who need your help. Please consider donating to the Makindu Children's Program to help raise these families out of poverty and provide them with the hope and opportunities they deserve. Your support can make all the difference. Thank you.
