Rural women development trust is working for education and economic development of rural vulnerable community women and children in the Salem district of Tamilnadu. Primary focus of the organization is to rescue the bonded labor women and their families those who migrated for their livelihood needs.
In the month of July there were identified 9 families working as bonded laborer in the brick kiln nearby Edapadi. RWDT took necessary steps to releales those persons from the bondedness. With continuous efforts with support of local administration, RDO and Thasildar, the bonded laborer were rescued and sent to their native villages. RWDT is seeking support to rehabilitate their families and education support for their children.
RWDT aims to protect child rights through conducting evening special coaching centers in rural villages of Tharamangalam. The main objectives of this program are To provide high quality education for vulnerable children and improve literacy among rural vulnerable children of economically poor families and also to sensitise the children as socially responsible, active citizens to address social injustice against children. The children have been monitored regularly through these centers. Child laborer and bonded laborer are immediately observed and rescued. Due to these centers effective function, the school drop outs are highly reduced. The special coaching centers have been conducted in 10 rural villages about 450 children are getting benefit through these centers. Recently educational support program has been conducted in Tharamangalam. In this program educational material such as note books, geometry box and school bags were distributed for about 40 needy children from the special coaching centers. Scholarships were distributed to the higher education students those who studying medical colleges, engineering colleges and arts colleges.
In addition 24 more rescued bonded laborer women have been given skill training in coconut coir making. In this training the modern updates of twinning machines, quality coir making and recent demands were taught by expert trainers. After successful completion of skill training the women were supported 8 unit of coir making machines. In each unit three women together involve to produce coconut coir ropes. The products are sold in whole sale market and get right price. Now their daily income has been raised about Rs,300 per day. It is three times multiples of their previous income. Now they are enjoying their livelihood rights. They can able to feed well nutrition food for their children.
Out puts
The educational support such as note books, geometry boxes and school bags have been distributed for 40 children from economic poor families. The child laborer issues and bonded labor issues have been addressed in the respective villages through continuous monitoring.
The self entrepreneurship supports for 24 women have been offered. They make profit and enjoy their livelihood rights. They also are prevented from felling again in the traps of bonded labor system.
9 members were rescued from bonded laborer system and resettled in their native villages.
Their children were reenrolled into schools to continue their education and enjoy their childhood rights.
