In March 2018, we reported how the reading materials you donated have helped to address the lack of access to reading materials and its effect on reading habits of pupils. As part of our promised commitment for this second quarter, we intensified our monitoring to encourage pear-to-pear reading habits among beneficiary children to make the books more useful and to sustain the high interest in reading.
Grameen Ghana’s monitoring and engagements with pupils and parents in this period revealed that, despite the absence of electricity in the community, pupils compete with their mothers for household lamps while some parents have procured solar lamps for their wards. Children now gather in groups around one household lamp with a leader to do group reading. Musah, a volunteer teacher, narrated that “more beneficiary pupils were able to pass the reading test with ease this year compared to last year. This is partly due to the reading materials GG provided”. In expressing his gratitude, Kwesi, a Primary five pupil, said, “Our reading skill has improved, that is why you could see us compete on who to read first during English lesson. This was never the case las year. A lot of us have stopped unnecessary play in the absence of our teachers. We now stay in our class to read the story books when ever our teachers are not in class”.
In the coming months, GG intends to explore how access to reading lamps at household level can be improved to support the children’s reading efforts. We hope that you continue your kind donation to make all the children better readers with child friendly reading materials. Once again, Grameen Ghana extends the sincere thanks and appreciation from the teachers, parents and pupils of Bolni in Northern Region of Ghana.
