Greetings,
As stated in our September 2024 report, I was headed to the United States (Kansas City, Mo) for learning and benchmarking on how the schools and communities serve individuals with disabilities supported and hosted by the CHDF Ambassadors and CHDF Volunteers. I was in the US for 21 days and during that time I was privileged to visit learning institutions whose categories deal with children from birth to adulthood.
Some of my key lessons:
As a result of the key learnings from the trip, we have restructured our school to organize in smaller groups and meet specific needs. This included:
1. High needs for intense interventions
2. Some level of independence and more abilities to learn
3. High level of learning and ability to help others
In addition, we have started a class specifically to learn activities of daily living (ADLS), a vocational class for computer skills, tailoring and knitting, and we now have a therapy area in the cerebral palsy class. We have also purchased an extensive curriculum that we are adopting to guide the CHDF trainers to teach activities of dailyliving.
These changes have already resulted in children who are empowered to learn new skills and increase independence in their daily living. The school is more vibrant and active as students are able to contribute to serving CHDF in practical ways. The curriculum has also helped the teachers to tailor lessons by grade and individual ability. With the funds raised on my visit, we have purchased items to create a proper learning
environment and other learning resources. This includes a printer, laminating machine, projector, tables with erasable tops, painting supplies, items to equip a sensory room as well as kitchen equipment and other supplies.
What is Next?
Thanks to a generous donation, we have hired 2 occupational therapists and one physical therapist for the next 3 months. We hope to raise additional funds for the 10 caregivers and 4 teachers.
