Participants of this camp are sponsored children who are graduating from sixth grade and going into junior high school. In this transition, while graduating and preparing to enter a new school, we designed a series of curriculum to help them to better understand themselves, to learn how to communicate with others, and to learn how to overcome difficulties and challenges.
There is a "Teenager's Ceremony" which is the focal point of the trip. We arranged the rite of passage to be a 9km road-course where everyone must ride their bike to accomplish this task. The course consists of hillside terrain, mud, and drizzle which increase the difficulties of this course.
During the course, we saw a child, she was the slowest in the group and was accompanied by our volunteer. "The way this youngster rode the bike was wobbly. Uphill made it even more difficult. But she did not give up. She did not ride well and it's tired. She was the last one. But she still persisted with her effort and finished the course." Volunteer said.
Afterward, a teacher consciously cared for this girl and said, "The course is not easy and I saw you really put your effort. What's your feeling after this accomplishment? Feeling happy?" The girl nodded her head with a huge smile on her sunshine tanned face.
There is unlimited potential and treasure in every one of us. Sometimes, it just needs to be unearthed.
In the future days, there would be many challenges big and small wait for us. We hope these children will be able to use the tools and treasures they acquired when facing difficulties and challenges.
