Update on our work in the Bolivian Amazon

By Erik Taylor | Executive Director

The political winds shifted in Bolivia since the last update. Evo Morales, the president of Bolivia for the last 14 years, and his party MAS, were forced out of office. Sustainable Bolivia is a non-governmental organization, with no political affiliation; however, the event did have a significant impact on our plans for the research center. Fortunately, things have settled in Bolivia and its life as usual in the Aquicuana Reserve.

The new government will continue to support the electrification project, bringing 3 kilometers of electricity to families inside the reserve. The project is already advanced with the designated area prepared and nearly all materials ready; however, some bureaucratic hurdles remain. Once the electrification project is implemented, the research center will have a closer access point for electricity. Our organization will benefit directly and Sustainable Bolivia has donated materials including all the main electrical posts and continues to work hand-in-hand with the community Warnes to fully implement the project.

Sustainable Bolivia is also working with our other neighboring community, San Jose, to initiate a running water project. We’ve designed a project to bring running water to 27 families, with over 600 meters of distance, with the use of a solar-powered pump.

We look forward to receiving new volunteers in March who will split time between our office in Riberalta and the “the field.” We also confirmed the arrival of 8 volunteers with Kay Pacha, a 501(c)3 non-profit focused on climate change solutions. Together we will work on research station construction and reforestation projects in the month of May/June.

There is still much work to be done but the project continues to advance. Another neighboring community, Antofagasta, is interested in joining the reserve, potentially extending protection to an additional 10,000 hectares of jungle land! We have high aspirations for 2020 and appreciate everyone’s continued support.
