Nurse Family Partnership Program in Bulgaria

In the past few months since our last communication, we have remained steadfast in our commitment to securing the long-term sustainability of our home-visiting service, which has provided essential support to hundreds of disadvantaged families of young parents and their children. Throughout this period, we have continued to draw inspiration from the remarkable young women we serve in our daily work and their resilience in overcoming challenges to create a better future for their children.

It is for this reason that we have chosen to share a story that exemplifies our support and mission, which transforms lives—made possible by the dedication of our exceptional nurses and clients, as well as your invaluable support.

Boryana was just over 18 years old when she gave birth to her son Radoslav. The young mother lives in Sofia (Fakulteta, a segregated Roma neighborhood) and, despite all difficulties and deprivations, she keeps smiling and being grateful. One significant source of her confidence and assurance is the weekly support she receives from her home-visiting nurse, Plamena, who has been a member of the Nurse-Family Partnership team since 2016.

The young mother had to discontinue her education due to poverty and early pregnancy, leaving school after the 10th grade. She enrolled in our home-visiting service during her early pregnancy, recognizing her need for support and guidance as she navigated the uncertainties of becoming a parent at such a young age.

Boryana delivered her baby boy prematurely, at seven months and weighing only 1500 grams. She needed substantial support in the care for a premature baby, which included adhering to a medical plan, managing breastfeeding, and addressing the depression she experienced. Our colleague Plamena, a midwife with 25 years of experience, was by her side every step of the way.

We have produced a video (link HERE and below the text) that highlights part of Boryana's journey, showcases Plamena’s mission to provide assistance, and reflects our broader goal: that every young mother and her child—particularly those living in poverty—receive professional support in their homes. During the period from early pregnancy until the child’s second birthday, parents enrolled in our Nurse-Family Partnership program benefit from over 50 home visits designed to enhance parenting capabilities, foster confidence, and facilitate steps toward economic stability.

Dear friends,

Since we last gave you an update about our work, more than twenty new families have joined our home-visiting program - the Nurse-Family Partnership. Thanks to your support, many before them have received essential items needed in the first few months after their baby's arrival into the world. However, our resources are scarce and it's getting more and more difficult to meet the new families' needs. 

Currently, there are  gaps in the care packages we provide to each family once their baby is born. These are designed to ensure the basic level of care for families which have no means to supply these otherwise. We are also struggling when it comes to supporting young mothers and their children with medical expenses. We would love to team up with you in order to fill these gaps and ensure that the families and their babies are in good health.
