Mobile Hospitals of rural India

“Being located in the interiors, we do not have any medical facility nearby. The nearest government primary health care centre is 12 miles away and with no access to public transport facilities. We face many health problems and are vulnerable in case of an emergency.”- Miyalal Kabul Mujawar (80years old)

Miyalal isn’t the only one. There are many more individuals like him who share the same concern. Most of the villages in rural Maharashtra do not have access to quality healthcare facilities. Unavailability of transport services in these exteriors makes it even more difficult for the rural communities. Being an integral part of Latur and Osmanabad districts, SPARSH decided to widen up its boundaries of work and extend its services to the nearby villages through Mobile Medical Units (MMU), with the intent to provide health coverage to the people living in the remotest of areas. Currently, there are 2 MMU’s covering 48 villages and reaching out to more than 55,000 individuals through its clinical and curative services. The MMU provides special care to the vulnerable population who cannot travel till the hospital such as pregnant mothers, children and senior citizens.

The programme also works to empower the rural communities with information regarding access to government healthcare services and helplines and disseminates this information through the health clubs initiated in all the villages. It works with the CBO’s (Community Based Organisations) such as Women Self Help Groups, Adolescent Girls Groups and Village Health and Sanitation Committees to bring a sustainable change in the healthcare indicators of the village.

We strive to make rural communities healthier by generating a demand for quality healthcare.
