Dear donors,

This goes out to you all who inspire us in a great way by making it possible for us to rescue, rehabilitate and reintegrate girl child victims of human trafficking through your generous donations. By and large, human trafficking is a global crisis and Kenya being a source, transit and destination of victims of this inhumane act, HAART’s scope of work is undeniably massive given that it is a pioneer organization in that area. Just to mention, HAART Shelter is the only shelter in Kenya that purely focuses on rehabilitation of girl child victims of human trafficking. Mark Twain once remarked," Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see". We are deeply grateful for all your support that has been playing a pivotal role in fueling our efforts to combat human trafficking.

The greatest satisfaction that we draw from this work is in seeing the transformation of victims from being totally traumatized, malnourished, disoriented, hopeless, detached, distressed and demotivated to happier, healthier, self- aware, focused and determined girls who can stand up for their rights.

Some of the services offered at the shelter include; provision of basic needs, psychotherapy, medical aid, legal aid, educational support, home tracing, reintegration and follow up. Provision of these services is what forms the backbone of our work and which has been our focus throughout the 4 months period.

In the month of January, shelter activities oscillated around ensuring the school-going girls receive all their shopping, facilitating school fees and levies payment, offering them pocket money and transport to their various boarding schools. Towards the close of the month of March, activities revolved around adjusting the schedule to suit holiday needs and receiving the girls enrolled in various educational institutions back to the shelter.

HIGHLIGHTS

2 girls living with physical disability have been on weekly physiotherapy
Three girls were enrolled in school.
1 girl who finished her primary school in 2018 and performed excellently joined secondary school
1 girl was repatriated to Tanzania. She received economic empowerment
5 reinter rations are set to be done in April as the girls have fully recovered and the family has been well prepared economically and psychologically
1 baby boy was transferred to another foster care home
25 victims offered shelter
5 new victims admitted to the shelter.
Skills training activities in handcrafts, computer and garment making were conducted by outsourced tutors. The girls made beautiful crafts and dresses.

Our goals for the coming months are to:

Improve accessibility for the 2 physically handicapped victims
Establish, maintain and strengthen partnerships.
Rescue
Rehabilitation
Home tracing
Reintegration
Economic empowerment

Progress report for HAART Kenya shelter

In the past 3 months of HAART Kenya shelter’s work of offering care and protection services to child victims of human trafficking, we have been able to realize monumental achievements in line with our set objectives and even beyond including hosting 2 victims living with physical disability which called for capacity building of the staff in order to ensure the victims receive specialized care.

All this wouldn’t have been possible without your support which we are heartily grateful for. Our shelter which has been operational for 2 years now offers protection services to child victims of human trafficking. The services offered include; shelter for safety, provision of food and clothing, psychotherapy, medical aid, legal aid and educational support.

Our focus during this reporting period was; rescue, rehabilitation, home tracing, family support, economic empowerment, reintegration and follow-up after reintegration of victims.

A lot of activities took place during the month of November and December. The girls enrolled in boarding schools reported back to the shelter for holiday raising the population. To ensure they fully enjoyed their holiday, fun activities that included talent shows, cultural week, game drive, house decoration for Christmas and gifting during boxing day were incooperated in the schedule.

The victims carried on with skills training activities to learn computer, art and design skills. They made beautiful Ankara dresses for themselves, flower vases and Christmas wall decorations.

Highlights of the period;

8 victims were reintergrated and 3 repatriated (2 to Ethiopia and 1 to Uganda)
8 home tracings were done and 3 families received economic empowerment
5 girls sat for their final primary education and will continue receiving educational support.
29 victims offered shelter and provided with food and clothing.

Our goals for the coming months are to:

Rescue
Proceed with provision of all the rehabilitation services mentioned above.
Home tracing
Reintegration
Getting medical insurance for new survivors
Economic empowerment for victims.

Progress report for HAART Kenya shelter

With a lot of gratitude, HAART Kenya thanks you all for your continuous support in facilitating their work of providing girl child victim of human trafficking shelter. The donations have gone a long way in aiding with provision of different intervention services to the victims.

The sole aim of establishing the shelter was to offer girl child victim of human trafficking trauma informed and victim centered services to aid them in their healing process. These services include; shelter, basic needs, psycho-social support, medical aid, legal aid and educational support that is demarcated into three areas which are; basic literacy, long term educational support and skills training.

Our goal in the past 3 months was rescue, rehabilitation, home tracing, family support, economic empowerment, reintegration and follow-up for the victims.

Since we expanded our capacity in the last reporting period, we have been able to provide shelter for more victims 2 of whom are physically disabled. During this last quarter of October, shelter’s population grew after the girls enrolled in different school reported back for holiday.

At the core of our work, was rigorous skills training for the girls. They made beautiful pieces that includes skirts, dresses, bags, indoor slippers, bangles, earrings and floor mats.

Highlights of the period;

One girl was reunited with her daughter who was under the custody of the child’s father
One survivor had surgery on her right ankle following a prolonged period of swelling of the area where a corrective surgery had been done 6 years ago.
A section for Survivors own story was created on the HAART Kenya website for uploading of the girls’ pieces.
6 girls were enrolled in educational institutions

Our goals for the coming months are to:

Rescue
Continue with the skills training and offering survivors psycho-social support, legal support, medical support and educational support
Home tracing
Reintegration
Getting medical insurance for all the survivors
Economic empowerment for victims.
