Help save 500,000 sea turtle hatchlings in Yucatan

The 2021 nesting season is officially over for us. With your support, we saved 241,608 hawksbill and 337,732 green sea turtle hatchlings. These make 579,340 hatchlings! Our team drove many long nights during the seven months of the nesting season and worked tirelessly despite the clouds of mosquitoes and no-see-ums, wanting their blood and sweat to make this happen.

And though our fieldwork is over this year and our field team is off to a well-deserved vacation, the preparations for the next season are just starting. All our ATVs require maintenance, the field equipment needs some cleaning, and we need to write technical reports for our management authorities.

June marks the third month of our nesting season and also the beginning of the hatching season! In other words, this is the month where baby turtles start breaking their eggs to come out of the nest and start their journey into the ocean.
By the end of June, our team has released 6,349 hawksbill hatchlings. Baby green turtles hatch by late July or early August.
Also, from April to June, our team protected 1,777 hawksbill nests and 367 green turtle nests. We still have four months left of the nesting season and, our team is still working hard to protect the nests so that more hatchlings can enter the sea.
