Help save 500,000 sea turtle hatchlings in Yucatan

October 25th marks the end of another successful nesting season. Thanks to the valuable contribution of our donors over the past seven months, we protected 8,910 sea turtle nests, of which 859,983 hatchlings emerged and made their way into the ocean.

Sea turtles live between 80 and 100 years. They reach sexual maturity around 20 years. Females can lay around 800 eggs each nesting season, but only 1 in 1000 hatchlings will make it to adulthood. That is why we protect these nesting beaches, to ensure that many hatchlings make it to the ocean so they can return in two decades to complete their life cycle.

It sounds like an onerous long-term task, but it is giving results! This nesting season, the number of hawksbill nests increased by 50.67%, and 33.54% in green turtle nests. We plan to raise these percentages in the coming season. For now, we still have work to do writing reports, sending our vehicles to maintenance, and, most importantly, giving our team a much-needed rest. Stay tuned!

Last April, our fabulous team began the beach surveys to monitor sea turtle nesting at three of the most important nesting beaches of green and hawksbill sea turtles. Every night they survey 79 km of beach to protect sea turtles and their nests.
April was a bit low in the number of nests recorded with 86. But in May, the numbers increased ten times with 921 new nests. Now in June, with an additional 1,788 nests, we are at 2,795 nests counted and protected!

Moreover, little turtles are beginning to hatch, and our team has released 3,359 hatchlings into the ocean. Not bad for the first three months of the nesting season. We have four more months of surveys, and we look forward to seeing more little turtles reach the sea.
