The APEAG Goat Breeding Project started in the second quarter of 2024. It is currently in its second phase. APEAG experienced success in its first phases which produced favorable results. The members had goats that gave birth to several children, which they found to eat and also to sell. In this second phase, Lambi Fund assisted the association in purchasing 32 goats (30 female, 2 male) and in setting up a veterinary pharmacy. So far everything is going well enough. All intermediate activities have already been performed including formation of various committees to manage the project (goat distribution committee, crossbreeding management committee and a committee to manage the Veterinary Pharmacy)
Since the start of the second phase, 63% of the goats have already bred. In the first quarter of 2025, we are expecting goats to give birth.
The organization gives people who are not members of the organization the opportunity to breed. The organization utilize this as a mean to generate revenue by imposing a charge to non-members. The owners of female goats request mating with the owner’s male goats. For each successful mating, the organization charges 200 gourds. It has generated a treasury of 4,200 gourds.
It has been reported that the goats are well. The veterinary technicians provides medication to prevent illness. So far no cases of illness have been recorded, there was only one case of miscarriage. According to the veterinary technician’s report, it may have been caused by a type of plant that the goat may have ingested.
The GFARM Goat Breeding Project have recently received funds at the beginning of December 2024 to start with the activities of the project. This group of women is using the same strategy as the APEAG Project. They will be purchaing an initial batch of goats to distribute to the first group of women and when the goats bred and reproduce, the kids will be distributed to other members who have not yet received a goat. To commence the project, the organization has to purchase 42 goats (38 females, 4 males) which will then be distributed to the initial group of beneficiaries.
The group of women seeks to create accessibility to purchase pharmaceutical medication for the goats in the area where the project will be implemented. The organization has already made available to the project a location to set up the veterinary pharmacy that will also be part of the project.
The Organization is currently in the planning phase of setting up all the committees that will work on the project. GFARM has already found a trainer who will conduct a 2 day training session on goat breeding techniques.
