Goats: Help Families Become Self-Sufficient

Continuation of Goat Breeding

Second Phase: The first group of goats now have kids, which includes about 50 goats.

The organization has already made many reforms to the herd, the old goats (male and female) that can no longer produce good yields are sold and replaced by younger ones so that the breeding process can continue among the Organization.

MPPDSCA started at the end of 2021 with a herd of 70 goats, 64 females and 6 males. Unfortunately, 15 of the goats died a week after their purchase due to poor transport conditions and poor adaptation to the new environment. As the project progressed, the Organization decided to change the strategy. The Organization did not distribute the goats to small groups as usual. Inxtead the goats were distributed directly to the members. The kids are raised in the backyard, where the kids are born. Upon the birth of their new kids, the beneficiary members provide the Organization with one animal to distribute to the remaining members and the other animals will remain for the currrent members.

There are now 49 goats left, already raised as breeding goats. Several miscarriage cases, approximately 8, were recorded in the project and other cases of disease also appeared in the herd.

Fortunately, the Veterinary Technician was able to provide all the support he could to prevent the death of other kids. About 50 kids were born by the end of the summer.

Breeding Goats Part 1

Livestock projects are very important in the economy of the peasants living in the countryside.. Money is tight. When there are cases of illness, death, school openings and other urgent needs, the peasants generally take a small animal they have raised and sell it to the market so that they can raise a little money to help solve these problems. This is why Lambi attaches great importance to the demands of the peasant organization's breeding project.

In the breeding projects the Organizations work really together and provide good for the goats. They are actively involved in the purchase of animals, in the construction of free range pens, in the establishment of grass fields for the animals to find food, in the preparation and fetching of food to bring to the goats, and in the purchase of medicines when a goat gets sick.

Lambi makes available to the Organization the support provided in the field of breeding financial and Technical means to carry out all these activities. Organizations always hire a Veterinary Agent to follow the herd's progress with them and help them care for the animals directly when there is a case of disease.

In addition to these activities, the Organization monitors the conditions under which their kids are born and also plan the distribution of these children to members after weaning.

Lambi is currently pursuing two Goat Breeding projects with the AVFV (Warrior Women’s Organization) and the MPPDSCA (Progressive Peasant Movement, twelfth section of the commune of Aachen).

AFVF started in 2021 with a herd of 90 indigenous females and 9 male breeding goats. After about a year and a half this project will include 90 females that make 350 offspring. 51 died but they have a total of 299 live offspring, The organization has 220 members who are all already breeding at least 2 goat apiece.

The dust is settling...

Since the earthquake last year, Lambi has provided $90,000 USD (8,730,000 Haitian gourdes @ 97HTG/$1 USD) to small farmers and women-led projects to help them resume their economic activities.  These funds allowed the small farmers to resume production of fast-growing crops (some of which have already matured and harvested) and assisted women-led organizations in replacing merchandise that was lost during the earthquake. A total of 478 members of grassroots organizations have benefitted from this program: 352 farmers and 126 women from organizations across the rural south.

As a result of the earthquake, several organizations had irrigation systems and potable water systems damaged. There have been many difficulties in these areas for organization members to get potable water.  Members usually walk more than 1 hour to find water from 2-3 sources that have been channeled in the areas.  At times, there is a lot of fighting at these locations because the people are desperate to get water to bring back to their families.

Lambi Fund’s Regional Monitors sat down with several of those organizations who were victims of the earthquake in Okay. The goal was set to provide water towers for the organizations that were most severely affected by this problem, as this system was the most expedient to implement and most cost-effective at that time.  These towers collect rain water to be filtered for drinking and everyday use. Since Lambi did not have enough funds to dedicate to this project to each organization, the monitors chose only 2 among them to have benefit for a total cost of $30,000 for 20 water towers.  The 2 organizations were RPP and AFGDL.  RPP was provided with 12 water towers and AFGDL 8.  Each water tower holds 1000 gallons each.  More than 300 members of the 2 organizations will have access to the water from the towers. Some of the towers are already in place today and are currenlty collecting rain water. The installation of the water towers is nearly completed.

In addition, $22,500 USD has been awarded to 9 organizations to help their members with the reconstruction/reparation of their homes.  The plans are underway and will be completed in early March.
