Its over 7 months since the completion of the first phase of the community water project to provide potable water to 13,000 rural dwellers in Nigeria. Rural residents continue to benefit from the water supply. However, there is a challenge of irregular power supply as the second phase (Solar panel Installation) has witnessed low progress due to lack of funding.
The first phase of the water project since its completion continues to be a major source of water to its primary community and environs. Also, there is an increasing burden on the water source as the population it serves continues to increase. The challenges of irregular power supply and the cost of over reliant on generator further buttress the urgency to complete the second phase (solar panel installation) of the project. This will ensure regular water availability due to uninterrupted power supply, reduce the current burden on the water source and increase water supply to another 7000 rural dwellers in adjoining communities.
Despite lack of funds for the second phase of the project, Dako Foundation for Rural Healthcare and Education (DFRHCE) specifically thank you- our esteemed donors for your immense support so far in completing the first phase. With continuous support and the need to make our rural communities a better place, DFRHCE believes the solar panel phase of the water project is achievable and hopes to replicate this project in the future, to other communities that lack access to water supply.
Rationale for the water project
In Nigeria, access to safe and regular water supply is a major challenge as clean and regular water supply have not kept pace with the rapid rate of population increase. Water scarcity, poor water quality and inadequate sanitation negatively impact food security, livelihood choices and educational opportunities for poor families and lead to water borne diseases such as diarrheal, cholera, typhoid, hookworm etc. This situation is particularly worse in underserved rural communities where most of the children die due to preventable diseases associated with inadequate water supply, sanitation and hygiene. This situation is very rife in the communities where DFRHCE implements a water project to serve 13,000 rural dwellers.
Project Overview
Construction of a 40 feet (ft) high scaffolding at the artesian water source in order to carry 10,000Litres of water reservoir, solar panel installation and water distributed through extension pipes to six (6) other neighbouring communities at a distance of 5 kilometers.
Project Location: Iyerekhu, Edo State, Nigeria.
Project Reach: The project is expected to provide water supply to reach 13000 people in total; 6000 people in its primary community and another 7000 residents through its water extension from the source to neighbouring communities.
Project Implementation Successes.
The first phase of the water project has been successfully completed and commissioned. Activities carried out in this first phase include.
Next phases of the water project: Solar Panel Installation and Water Extension
These are aimed to provide uninterrupted power and increase water supply to another 7000 rural dwellers respectively. The second and third stages when completed would reach a larger number of people including farmers and school children who continuously get late to school due to long distance walk to fetch water several times daily before attending school etc. This water extension project is expected to benefit communities and end their lingering inability to access regular potable water supply. Being the first of its kind in providing water supply across communities. With continuous support, we hope to replicate this project in other communities that lack access to water supply.
