Teresa lives about a 15-minutes walk away from the closest town center. Twenty years ago, Teresa and her husband had moved from the Caribbean side to Los Planes in search of a better life. She had 7 children. They all left in search of greener pastures. Ten years ago, her husband passed, and at the age of 78, keeping her farm productive by herself is hard. She does what she can to feed herself, some chickens, and some small crops; she bakes some goods to sell at the local store, and one of her sons sends money whenever he can. But she struggles to make ends meet every month.
Thus, is why every month, Mayra and Jorge from the Corcovado Foundation bring a complete pack of food to her home. "God bless you and your path! And God bless the hands that help you put together these gifts for us," she exclaims as they leave to visit the next house. Mayra, our local liaison shares with me the happiness she feels delivering these boxes of food to people like Teresa. Like her, 19 more elderly individuals live in extreme poverty, isolated, and forgotten.
Donors like you make it possible to put together these packages for people like Teresa and others. It is also a way to remind them that someone cares. So every time the foundation's car stops in front of them, they feel again that they are not forgotten.
Every Christmas season, we collect gifts from friends, family, and colleagues to distribute among the children of the humblest schools in the area. For many kids, these will be their only gifts at Christmas.
We also have a small party for them, some parents join us and donate a cake, and we put together a piñata and give them a bag of candies and apples. This year we are thinking about doing the same for those twenty senior men and women who also get so little love throughout the year. We will pick them up and bring them to the Corcovado Foundation Biohostel (www.corcovadobiohostel.org), where we will have a small party, maybe tamales, eggnog, and music.
Your support to our organization makes all these small acts of generosity possible. I appreciate your kindness!
P.S. If you would like to join our Children's Christmas parties, you can donate and leave a note mentioning the purpose of your gift.
