From January to July 30, the foundation delivered 131 food packages to families in different communities in the Drake Bay area.
On this occasion, Mayra, who is in charge of delivering the packages, prioritized three adults from the Guerra community. Estero Guerra has around eight families living from livestock and essential crops. They produce milk and cheese but are very isolated from the communities of Progreso and Agujitas.
Mayra tells us that she has known that community for a long time and that their situation is complicated. “It is a community that lacks electricity, telephone and internet access, and very few resources. I thought of visiting them because they had told me that some older adults were in vulnerable situations, so I decided to go. I found myself with 3 adults really in terrible shape. I also visited two who lived in a borrowed house and needed to walk a long way to earn a couple of hours of work and take food home. They also do not have a state pension since it is difficult for them to go out and do paperwork.
Since the start of the pandemic, the Corcovado Foundation has been bringing food to older adults and families in vulnerable conditions. Over time, we realized that the situation of many of these people was not related to the pandemic but to the abandonment in which they lived by both their families and the government and local entities.

Desde enero al 30 de Julio la fundación había entregado 131 paquetes de comida a familias en diferentes comunidades en la zona de Bahía Drake.
En esta ocasión, nuestra encargada de entregar los paquetes priorizó 3 adultos de la comunidad de Guerra. En Estero Guerra hay alrededor de 8 familias viviendo de la ganadería y cultivos básicos. Producen leche y queso, pero están muy aislados de las comunidades del Progreso y Agujitas.
Mayra nos cuenta que conoce esa comunidad de desde hace mucho tiempo que su situación es muy difícil. “Es una comunidad que carece de electricidad, sin acceso a internet y de muy bajos recursos. Tenía la idea de visitarles porque me habían comunicado que se encontraban algunos adultos mayores en situaciones vulnerables y tome la decisión de ir. Me encontré con 3 adultos realmente en muy mal estado. También visite a dos que vivían en una casita prestada y que requieren caminar largo trecho para ir a ganarse un par de horas de trabajo y llevar comida a su casa. Tampoco cuentan con pensión del estado, ya que se les dificulta salir a hacer tramites”.
Desde el arranque de la pandemia la Fundación Corcovado ha estado llevando alimentos a adultos mayores y a familias en condición de vulnerabilidad. Con el tiempo nos dimos cuenta de que la situación de muchas de estas personas no estaba relacionada con la pandemia sino con el abandono en el que vivían tanto de parte de su familia como del gobierno y las entidades locales.
El apoyo de donantes que mes a mes nos donan para seguir llevando este alivio a estas familias es fundamental para poder mantener este esfuerzo.
