The School Year is Wrapping Up

Thank you again for choosing to give to RHL's project ensuring vulnerable children in a remote area of Liberia learn to read.
The school year ends this month and we are looking forward to seeing the end of year reading reports. We will send them to you as soon as we receive them from the teachers!
There are several aspects to this program that make it unique.
- Two organizations (RHL and Rebuild Africa) are partnering to achieve a shared goal: improve literacy outcomes for children in Kolahun, Liberia
- On-going teacher training with daily coaching for teachers (most teachers have little training and may only read at the third grade level)
- Adherence to phonics based instruction using culturally relevant reading materials
- Accelerated classes for overage students focusing solely on literacy and numeracy
With these interventions, we are providing the highest quality education in the District.
We are planning for the next school year now. We recognize there are so many incredible projects to choose from. Thank you for believing in these children and ensuring they have the skills for a bright future.
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you'd like to learn more.
With gratitude,
Saundra

The fight for literacy continues...
By Saundra Williams | Executive Director

Thank you once again for supporting our micro project to help 100 vulnerable children in Liberia. While we did not meet our full goal of $10,000 we will be able to accomplish a great deal in the coming months thanks to your support, including:
- RHL will purchase books from STAR Books, a West African publishing company, located in Monrovia.
- RHL will purchase a full set of required readers for Grades 1 through 6.
- RHL will purchase both the supplemental and additional readers to stock the library shelves. These readers have required curricula in classrooms, however, most families are unable to afford them. Students will now have them available at the community library!
As these activities are fully implemented we will update you with post-impact reports. Additionally, we plan to continue our fundraising efforts outside of GlobalGiving to ensure this project is fully realized.
Thank you so very much for your support. We are that much closer to achieving this goal.
Warm Regards,
Saundra Williams, Executive Director

Thank you for donating to this project!
We are pleased to report that the tutor training for Module 1 of the phonics-based course has been completed. All the tutors and teachers from Kolahun who participated found it of great value and are eager for the next training!
All children were assessed for their reading skills prior to the start of the school year with an assessment tool from the training. They are working hard and motivated to improve their skills.
The tutors are now teaching after school at the Vocational Education & Training Center four days a week focusing specifically on reading skills. The tutors are using their new e-readers for use in the classroom, providing new reading material to students.
We are closing out the fundraising for this project as we successfully raised all the funds necessary. A big thank you to all who donated to this through Global Giving and directly through RESTORE HOPE.
Gratefully,
Saundra Williams, MPH MIA
