Jose David Life Challenges

Jose David at School
Jose David at School

Spanish Translation at the Bottom

José David just turned 11 and lives with his parents in Las Torres, the upper part of La Vega, in Caracas. He is the second of 3 brothers. Jose David has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a disorders that affects ability to move, maintain balance and posture.

José David should attend a basic school, but these are very distant from the area where he lives. His mother, Erika, has no car and cannot take him to one of these schools due to the difficulties involved in transferring him and his wheelchair. It should be noted that most of the transportion in this area is in rustic Toyota. For this reason, José David attends El Porvenir Preschool in Las Torres, which is relatively close to his home.

El Porvenir de Las Torres Preschool is one of the beneficiary institutions of the program. In the program, balanced feeding is provided in its educational centers to preschool children in vulnerable areas, with the purpose of keeping them out of the risks of malnutrition and school dropout.

Attending preschool has benefited him. According to the Preschool director, he interacts with other children, does more motor exercises playing with them, and has improved fine motor skills by carrying out activities for such purposes. In the cognitive aspect, he already recognizes all colors and vowels. Also, he pays attention to adults when he is given an instruction.

José David had surgery last year to extend the tendons of his leg so that he can support his feet. However, he is waiting for further surgery.

His mother finds it difficult to support his three children, especially with the special condition of José David. In addition, the food sold by the CLAP (government program for the sale of cheap food) is not enough to supply his home during the month.

José David is a cheerful child and enjoys the activities of his school and those sponsored by the program. During Christmas, Santa brought gifts to all the preschool children, and José David was very special to Santa and Mrs. Claus.

For José David, the food program is very important as well as being able to attend his school to continue interacting with other children and to continue developing his skills and abilities, cognitive and motor. And that is the reason for the program. That while Venezuelans are still looking for ways to overcome this crisis, we cannot let the future die. They are the future of the country.
