Be a hero for vulnerable children in Mexico

At the top of the slope of the hill, his house built on rocks, in a house of approximately 20 m, in the cradle of the highest marginalization and poverty in the Monte Albán neighborhood, lives a boy , 8 years old, with his family. From there, every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, he goes down hand in hand with his mother and his little sister to take his music and game class, a class where he at the beginning of the cycle seemed very apprehensive and always trying to protect her sister. His needs derive from the complicated family environment. Following his case very closely, it has been observed that over the days, as he explores instruments such as the tambourine, maracas, drums and percussion, he has been able to find a space to socialize, interact more with his peers and  little by little he has stopped being apprehensive, nervousness due to anxiety has been less recurrent, in addition, his mother, who is dedicated to making tortillas to support her family, shares with us that her son feels very happy with his classes and that in home has also observed changes. The music and game class has become a space for exploration to learn about music based on musical games, and thus develop skills, aptitudes, sensations, values, creative abilities and healthy coexistence.

Crecemos DIJO A.C. has worked with one of its programs that uses music as a means to strengthen aspects such as the social fabric. The program benefits children and young people living in the Monte Albán neighborhood and its surroundings in risk situations, offering them a favorable socio-spatial space to develop new skills and values through a healthy coexistence.

The beneficiaries who participate in the music clases spend their afternoons in spaces free of violence where, through musical learning, they develop new life skills and incorporate community values for a healthy and peaceful coexistence. They focus their leisure time and thereby reduce the risk factors that intervene to get involved with negative trajectories. The program strengthens individual and community protection factors by involving girls, boys, and young people who live in the neighborhood at low, medium, and high risk levels.. Within this program, it also establishes processes for monitoring and strengthening parenting skills that promote the reconstruction of the social fabric.

"I like coming to the community eatery because I have fun since before I go to school."

Every morning, E. and his sister go to breakfast at the dining room of the Maria de Guadalupe Community Center in Monte Alban neighborhood in the state of Oaxaca. He says he gets up in a good mood because he knows he will have a good breakfast, and he will be laughing and talking.

Despite being very close to the capital of the state of Oaxaca (only 5 minutes away by car), Colonia Monte Alban is considered one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the state, due to high rates of crime, violence, addictions and parental neglect.

With breakfasts with all the nutritional requirements before school and after-school activities, Crecemos DIJO seeks to accompany children like E. and his sister, to help them develop their physical, emotional and cognitive abilities to give them the possibility of having a future far from their current context. 

Through the school accompaniment program, DIJO contributes to the reduction of the social inequality gap by providing them with the opportunity to have adequate physical, cognitive and socioemotional stimulation.
