Green Fields

Dears Supporters,
While some of us live where temperatures are below freezing and even sub-zero, it’s bright, sunny and warm in Kenya. The gardens at the 9 schools supported by Grow Against Poverty are full with organic produce. Students are being nourished and are enjoying the African kale, carrots and other vegetables that they’ve grown.
What’s great about this program is that it is self-sustaining! Once Grow Against Poverty raises funds to start a school garden, the sale of a small portion of the produce provides funds for seeds and organic fertilizer to keep the gardens going. Grow Against Poverty stays connected to each school by having volunteers visit every garden during each of the 3 growing seasons.
The news of this successful program has spread throughout Busia County and 6 schools have requested funding to get started. Grow Against Poverty would like to raise $4,000 for fencing, gardening tools, seeds and other supplies to help 2 schools start gardens this year and then the other 4 schools the next 2 years. We hope that you will continue to support this program.
Regards,

Dear Donors,
Green Fields and other Grow Against Poverty Kenya programs such as Pedal Power for Kenyan Education and Prevent Period Poverty are possible because of your donations and the work of Kenyan volunteers such as Alice. For the past twelve years she has been a GAP Kenya Community Mobilizer. When asked about her involvement in this organization, she said:
“I love working for GAP Kenya because the members are focused on transforming lives of needy people and this gives me an opportunity to contribute to their betterment through being a mobilizer, trainer and role model. I have benefitted from this organization by being offered the chance to train local women and students on making energy-saving stoves called fireless cookers, production of cereals and organic vegetables in the community and schools. I have received a volunteer’s bicycle and farm inputs during donations helping me do timely planting and stand out in the community.”
Again, thanks for your continued financial support of Green Fields and thanks to Alice and others who volunteer their time to bring this and other programs to over twenty schools in Kenya.
Sincerely,
John Roccanova

Carrots for Computers

Dear Supporters,
How are carrots and computers linked? The organic garden being planned for Bugeng'i Primary School will not only produce carrots and other nutritious vegetables for student lunches, but also funding for computer education classes. Some of the vegetables raised will be sold to cover program costs.
Grow Against Poverty has partnered with TechLitAfrica, a nonprofit started by Nelly Cheboi, CNN’s 2022 Hero of the Year, for this program. A teacher, curriculum and computers will be provided.
Fields for Greens is already active in eight schools. Your support has provided seeds, fertilizer and instruction in organic gardening techniques. Plans are to grow sweet potatoes and fruit trees at several of these established gardens.
Students have benefitted from school lunches with the inclusion of fresh produce such as carrots and African kale. School lunch is often the most nutritious meal of the day for many students. Attendance and academic performance have improved at all participating schools.
Thanks again for your supporting Green Fields as well as Pedal Power for Kenyan Education and Prevent Period Poverty.
