The month of February was a very difficult time as many of our staff at Hand to hand Foundation contracted the covid 19 virus and we were forced into quarantine. This also meant that for several weeks we were unable to distribute food to the families we serve every week. Every day families would call begging for help which was very traumatic for us all so we are more than happy to be up and running again.
We have been purchasing our rice directly from a farmer who is approximately 5 hours away. By the time we pay transportation costs, it is not any cheaper than buying it locally from the wholesalers. The advantage to doing it this way is that the farmer is able to get a fair price for his rice and this makes it easier for him to support his family. We are purchase 7- 8 tons of rice per month and we are his favourite customer!
Each week when families come to receive rice they are free to choose from any of the donated clothes, household goods and other donations that have been received. A few weeks ago some lucky families even went home with some 2nd hand bikes.
Packing the rice, cooking the food and serving 350 families every week is an enormous and tiring task, but the joy comes in seeing the people who are so very thankful for everything.
Thank you so much for giving so we can go!
