Help Mothers and Girls Earn a Brighter Future

We are so proud and delighted to hear stories of the women in our villages who are doing remarkably well, and creating a future for themselves and their families. Pictured above is Hawa, 32 years old, married to a farmer, with three of her five young children. Hawa is from Jafaina Village, in the south of North Darfur, adopted by Kids for Kids only last year in 2018. In September 2018 Hawa received five goats and one local breed donkey from the Animal Loan Committee, along with basic essentials including two blankets and two mosquito nets to protect and keep her family warm at night. Kids for Kids also provided vaccines for the animals, anthelmintic and worming treatments: preventing disease is essential to enable Hawa to build up her flock.

After the rainy season last year, Hawa’s goats produced two kids and this year they produced five more kids! After just one year, Hawa now has 12 goats in total – and four of her nanny goats are pregnant right now!   She has done very well in keeping her promise to take good care of her animals – the same promise that all Kids for Kids beneficiaries make before receiving assistance from the Animal Loan Committee. Hawa has made sure that the goats have access to an area of shade from the hot desert sun at all times. She collected bits of trees, grass, and dry fodder to create a Tabana near her home where the goats can graze.  The goats have provided milk that she is able to feed her children - and even more, so that she has been learning to make yoghurt that she can sell in the El Fasher and Turra Markets nearby. 

The fact that after only one year Hawa does not have to worry as much about feeding her children, thanks to her Kids for Kids goats, is a huge success! Just five goats and one year have enabled a young mother of five to see a future for her family. This is the sort of story that melts our hearts - and we can't wait to see what is next for Hawa!

The Kids for Kids Team

When we begin training in our villages, it is still months before we bring goats and donkeys in. We must make sure all our projects are sustainable and so all our village members, and especially our first and second generation beneficiaries, are ready and know how to care properly for the animals. Darfur is such a harsh environment, veterinary care is essential if they are to survive, yet there is none in any village.  It is also important that the Animal Loan Committee is in place and trained not just in animal welfare but in book keeping and accountability - that ensures sustainability. Last year's financial crisis in Sudan meant that it was almost impossible to get much money out of the banks each day, and so it became difficult to buy goats for the villages we adopted in 2018. When we were finally able to purchase goats there were very few to buy and prices were extortionate. For this reason, some of our beneficiaries are just receiving goats now - unavoidable however hard we worked.   But now there is good news!

I want to share with you some photos of new goats in the village of Matawy!  Nawal is 35 years old with seven young girls.  She received five goats last month, the share of a billy goat, two mosquito nets, two blankets and a donkey. Four of her goats are now pregnant - can you imagine?!  Nawal's daughters are already benefitting from the goats milk, so four more kid goats will certainly help enable her to earn an income and provide support to her family. Nawal is at last thinking about the future, making plans, and hoping she will be able to send all her daughters to school. Just think what these girls will be able to achieve if they all receive an education!

But we need your help, and specifically with mosquito nets this month.  With Malaria on the rise in Sudan (Doctors say the number of cases in North Darfur has climbed to over 12,000 people in less than a month) we are desperately trying to raise as much as we can for mosquito nets. We believe in prevention and mosquito nets help prevent children contracting not just malaria, but dengue fever and even yellow fever.   Mothers cannot think of the future if they cannot keep their children safe from such deadly diseases right now. Will you donate two nets today?  It is just £18/$23 for two nets to keep families safe at night.
