More from Hawa: The Benefits of a Donkey!

By Sage Lancaster | Fundraising and Outreach Coordinator

A Donkey is the only Transport in Darfur
A Donkey is the only Transport in Darfur

Earlier this year we started to tell you about a woman named Hawa and her family from Jafaina Village. Hawa was one of the goat loan beneficiaries in 2018 when we adopted Jafaina Village, and simple basic essentials and goats have helped her change her life already. Hawa received a local breed Donkey from the Kids for Kids Animal Loan Committee at the same time as her goats!  Hawa told us recently just how important her donkey has been - a huge help in bringing water from the hand pump, as well as helping to plough the family's farm that Hawa's husband works. The family is seeing a drastic change already in what they are able to harvest on their 2.5 acres, formerly scrub grass land. Along with being able to harvest more of the regions staple crop, millet, they have been able to grow tomatoes and okra! Hawa is able to travel to the nearby markets in El Fasher and Turra to sell any excess produce.

As well as helping out on the farm, the donkey makes it possible for Hawa's two eldest children to attend school!  The family lives in Jafaina Village but at the moment their nearest school is in Turra village, which is 6km away. Before Kids for Kids adopted Jafaina, before Hawa received a donkey, the children needed to fetch water every day and had no time to go to school.  But now, despite the distance, they are able to attend classes!

We can't wait to share more about Hawa and her family with you in the coming reports. For now, I hope this little story about all that your support has made possible for Hawa's family - and countless others - brings a smile to your face in these difficult times. It really is amazing to see what a small amount of help can make possible for people living in drastically different circumstances from our own.

Please Note: This week we have received news that there are confirmed COVID-19 cases in El Fasher. We are desperate to prevent the virus from reaching villages and are doing all we can to help. Please visit the Kids for Kids website to learn more about what you can do to help us, and please consider supporting our Urgent Appeal for Soap to combat COVID-19 on GlobalGiving. Just £20/$25 will provide enough soap for ten families enabling people to wash properly and give them a better chance against the virus. Thank you.
