Help Mothers and Girls Earn a Brighter Future

A future full of hope for Murra and her family!

Murra is a mother to 9 children. In 2017 she was chosen by her village to receive support through the Kids for Kids projects. She received 5 goats as part of the goat loan programme, a donkey to help transport water and till the land and also 2 blankets and mosquito nets to protect her children from cold nights and insect-borne diseases.

This is just part of the package that Kids for Kids provides to many families in need. People are so poor they cannot afford even basic essentials. Kids for Kids makes sure individual families have proper farm tools, an essential when people eat what they grow. But it doesn't stop there. Kids for Kids helps the whole community long term by providing both health care for the people and veterinary care for the animals. Key is water, and wherever possible Kids for Kids funds handpumps and other water projects.

Four years after Kids for Kids adopted her village, Murra's goat herd has grown to 23 animals. Her children are growing up healthy and strong as a result of the milk from the goats and the good news doesn't end there - as a result of being given a donkey, Murra was able to make use of a donkey plough provided for Murra and two other women. She was able to cultivate three acres of land, growing two sacks of millet, a sack of groundnuts and also six sack loads of hay for her animals.

Murra and her family are expecting an even bigger harvest this year, as they were able to farm 5 acres plus they are growing melons and okra!

This is what Kids for Kids is all about - supporting children, women and their families to create a future that is teeming with hope and opportunities. By providing such simple but powerful projects, families and whole communities are able to build a better life for themselves - this is what life should be like for all people in Darfur!

Murra's story is just one of the hundreds of success stories that Kids for Kids has witnessed over our 20 years - but we are only able to carry out such important work because of our generous supporters. We are only able to reach out to people like Murra because of the support from people like you!

Murra is looking forward to the future and now with a better harvest and money earned from selling goats milk and yoghurt, she is planning on sending her children to school!

There are hundreds of more mothers like Murra who deserve our help and support to give them the opportunities to raise themselves and their families out of poverty.

"I began to feel a sense of empowerment"

As 2020 draws to an end we reflect back on what an awful year it has been.

In Darfur, it has been a particularly hard year, not only with Covid-19 arriving in the villages but the people have suffered from droughts and fires and in August there was flooding. Not only did this wash away people homes and livelihoods but it brought with it a rise in malaria. And in the midst of all the natural disasters, Sudan as a country is suffering through an economic crisis - inflation has reached an astonishing 230%, meaning that basic essentials have skyrocketed in price, too high a price for the majority of families in Darfur to pay.

However, there is a flicker of hope and good news - in the villages that Kids for Kids adopted in 2019, the goats that were promised to the families most in need have arrived at their new homes.

Tahani is a 30-year-old mother of 5 - and has been left to raise her children on her own after separating from her husband. In her own words, she was 'facing the toughest and most difficult days of her life'.

However, Tahani was chosen by her village to receive a goat loan from Kids for Kids and received her animals last month and already 2 of the goats are pregnant! This means that Tahani can give milk for her children and earn a living from selling any extra milk and yoghurt that her goats provide.

Tahani is currently preparing to plant some winter crops to sell at the weekly market. The future is looking a little more bright for Tahani and her family. ' After I separated from my husband, I was afraid for my children's future.'

'After Kids for Kids entered our life, I began to feel a sense of empowerment and I felt confident, I began to change and feel stable and I am hopeful in improving my family's future'.

Tahani is just one of the women that Kids for Kids has been able to help because of the support of people like you!

If this year has taught us anything it is to keep on going when times are toughest and to stop and take a moment to appreciate the positive things that we are able to achieve when we all come together.

Because of your support, Tahani and many more families are feeling hopeful for the future, despite the worsening conditions in Sudan.

The Magic of Soap in a Time of Covid

Soap Means Hope for Families in Darfur

Sometimes it is the smallest thing that makes the biggest difference. In normal times, we are focused on somewhat "grand" but sustainable plans. Training healthcare workers, digging wells for handpumps, building kindergartens or walking a herd of life-changing goats into a village -- all are days for celebration.

But now it is the new normal, even in the remote villages of Darfur. And right now a simple bar of soap is life-saving.

Normally, Kids for Kids projects help the poorest of the poor build their way out of grinding poverty through tools to earn a living and feed their families. And we are continuing with what we can for our regular projects.

But in this new normal, we had the chance to get a truck load of simple soap out to Darfur and now we have to pay for it. We jumped in with both feet and delivered over 466,000 bars of soap to 105 villages. We have empowered women to have an ounce of control over keeping their children alive in these most difficult times. Simple instructions for proper handwashing came with the soap, so that it might be effective and lifesaving.

While we work to cover the cost of the soap, we are still building 5 kindergartens this year -- for education is the way out of poverty. We are training families to care for and grow their goat herds so there will be milk for children and enough sometimes to sell -- a livelihood that means perhaps mothers can afford a mosquito net or warm blanket for a cold desert night or farm tools for a better harvest.

Giving women in the villages of Darfur the tools to bring their families out of poverty is such a basic, successful and sustainable processes. And now a simple bar of soap makes all the difference. We so appreciate your continued support for the children of Darfur. We couldn't do it without you.
