Crowdsourced Mapping to Prevent FGM in Tanzania

Thanks to your generous support we are continuing to train local mappers to support progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals

Goal 1 – No Poverty End poverty in all its forms everywhere

What Crowd2Map is doing:

We are mapping basic services including education, water points, sanitation, and electricity

We work with rural communities to map underrepresented villages. See our Missing Villages Project

We are mapping  commercial activity to understand economic needs and opportunities

Goal 2 – Zero Hunger End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

What Crowd2Map is doing:

We map access to food, such as school farms, markets, and shops in order to identify food deserts

We map  farms to help NGOs such as Mboni ya Vijana and PlantVillage reach farmers for assistance and training opportunities 

Goal 3 – Good Health and Wellbeing Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

What Crowd2Map is doing:

We map areas where girls are at risk of Female Genital Mutilation and train Digital Champions to help protect them. Activists estimate that having better maps has helped protect over 3000 girls from being cut.  We were invited to talk about this work at the UN General Assembly in 2018.

We map barriers to healthcare services, such as the distance people must travel for healthcare and the cost of transportation. – See our healthcare mapping project.

For International Women's Day we did various online mapping events involving over 500 volunteers worldwide mapping from satellite images, plus training local women and girls on how to use free mapping tools to add safe places in their communites.  This was in addition to the training we provide to the local community each week. 

One of Tanzania Development Trust's three priorities is girls' education and we have funded many hostels in remote rural secondary schools over the years. One of the main benefits of these is they prevent girls having to walk up to four hours to and from school each day, often at great risk.  They also mean girls can study after school hours in a supportive environment rather than having to collect water and firewood in the evenings and so have better life chances. 

However usually demand for hostel places far outstrips supply, so if schools have better maps showing the routes their students walk to school, and the challenges they face they can allocate places more fairly, as well as demonstrate the need for hostels to potential donors. 

So we are very grateful to everyone who took part in our mapping campaigns on International Women's Day, and to you for your ongoing support.
